Please give the following steps a try:

• If you haven't already, make sure to Update your Xbox One Controller.
  
• If your controller is updated, press and hold the power button on your Xbox One console for 10 seconds.
  
• Once your console is powered off, unplug the power cord.
• Remove the batteries from your controller and replace with fresh batteries.
• Wait 5 minutes and then plug in your console.
• Try powering on your consoles from your controller.

I've tried syncing it several times. It works fine once the console is on, it just won't turn it on or turn off with the console, unless I do a hard reset.

How did you turn off the console? Did you have a light on the controller when you turned off console. Did you have light on the controller when you tried turning on the console?

 

Mr. Quimbly, this is a solution that has already been posed a few times. We need something that will actually help solve this issue because the controller updates don't work, hard resets are a temporary fix, and it's not the batterys that are the issue.
I've had this issue with my console for months now where my controller or kinect wont turn on my xbox without manually turning on the console first. This is a problem that needs to be solved. Working for a gaming store where I have customers upset coming to
me with issues about the controllers and I can't even tell them how to fix it because I can't even fix the issue myself. I thought it may have been because I have the day one edition, but it seems this is happening with every type console released. This is
not a small problem, this is something that needs a solution.

 

I feel it my duty to post my experience as well: Tried all of the above, and still no change. No matter what settings I use or fixes I attempt, the controller is unable to wake the console. +1 to the idea of Microsoft acknowledging this as a system flaw,
and not a fluke.

I have the Kinect-less AC bundle.

 

i'm having the same problem. mine started before the december update. not sure what caused it to start.

 

Please include me on this. I have exactly the same issue. After a lengthy chat session with Microsoft support who at first were trying to tell me that I could not have auto-off and instant-on enabled at the same time. I referred them to the following :-

support.xbox.com/.../learn-about-power-modes

They eventually suggested that I could return the power supply for repair/replacement. This would mean up to a month without being able to use my console and they did not give any indication that this would resolve things.

I don't really want to do this if it is possibly related to a software fault but I'm also concerned that there may be a hardware issue.

As a number of other people have exactly the same issue, surely this either means that Microsoft need to prioritise working on a solution and if it is a hardware problem issue a recall to replace affected units (as may be a problem with the console).

Has any one had any progress with this ?

 

Adding myself to this thread... have the same issue with the controller not always turning on the Xbox. Oh, the "Xbox On" kinect command never works for me, and also the Instant On doesn't always stay active either. Half the time it reverts back to a full
restart when I turn on the Xbox, like it forgets that I have Instant On selected or something. Not sure if this is a coincidence, but the Instant On thing seems to have started occurring around the same time that I started using an external Hard Drive. I
thought it interesting that someone else also reported weird power on issues after adding an external too. Maybe that's the issue? Really hoping for a fix!

 

I have been having controller issues everyday (controller not turning on console). Tried batteries, updates, unplugging and everything else microsoft keeps re-suggesting. Fix the *** controller issues we are all having and quit wasting our time. It's
not as if we had this problem on our 360s.

We paid a lot of money for these consoles, they should work properly!

 

I'd like to add that I'm having the EXACT same issue described by PlayerXXX, where the console won't stay in "instant on" mode. Like every couple days, it automatically shuts down completely and turning it on does a cold reboot.

I've had my xbox one for about 7 months and this wasn't an issue before, so it's not my power setup.

 

I'm pretty sure that when you guys can't turn it on with the controller, it's the same issue I'm having (described above). I just tend to use my voice by default, but I definitely noticed that my controller also won't turn it on when this issue happens.

Please go ahead and try the following steps if you haven't already:

If you have already tried the steps above, please try the following:

• If your console plugged into a surge protector, make sure that your console is plugged directly into the wall.
  
• Make sure that your controller is within range of your console (within 30ft of your console).
  
• Make sure that there are no objects between your controller and console such as the following: cordless phones, microwave ovens, wireless routers, metal shelves and metal dividers.
  

If the issue continues to occur after trying the suggested steps, please let us know the following:

• Does the issue occur with a different controller?
• Which power mode is your console set to? Instant on mode or energy-saving mode?
  
• Does the issue occur when your controller is connected with a USB cable?
• How often does the issue occur?

I would try a re clabration with the controllers your trying to use by going to the settings menu and device and settings and try updating your controllers there,this may help out the problems

 

I think all the suggested methods have been discussed earlier in the thread and at least for me those did not work.

Instant mode

Does the issue occur when your controller is connected with a USB cable?

No. Xbox starts just fine when USB is attached

How often does the issue occur?

When I change setting from power saving to instant mode the first boot on instant mode works OK. After that I need to manually start from the console and controller start up will not work at all. "Xbox on" voice command worked with kinect but this is not
an option for me because finnish is not supported.

I just noticed that restart using controller worked when I shutdown the console while battlefield 4 was running. After I stopped the game before shutdown, xbox cannot be started using controller in instant mode.

Looks like something's wrong with the firmware as the issue cannot be reproduced while game is on and it works just fine on first boot after power mode change

 

Same issue here. I got the AC Bundle from Best Buy back in November. Sometimes my controller cannot turn the console on. It's a really annoying issue because I have to stand by my console and see if I can turn it on with my controller. It kinds of defeats
the purpose of having the feature to turn on the console with the controller.

I can turn on the console directly but sometimes not with my controller. I suspect this is an software issue, because it will work fine sometimes.

Also, there is another issue with the controller. Sometimes my controller would loose connection during a gaming session. It is very frustrating especially during the naval battle in assasins creed.
