My xbox controller stopped working

not sure you tried this yet, but please try the following:
I'm currently assuming you are using a xbox console.

1. Fully power down the console

2. Disconnect power from the console when it is fully powered down.
3. If there are any external storage devices connected to the console please disconnect those.
4. Wait at least 1 minute.

5. Power the console on again to see if the issues with the controller have been fixed.

If you did have a external storage device connected, and if the issue has been fixed try to reconnect the external storage device.
If the issues come back after the reconnecting of the external storage device then that external storage device might be failing (hardware wise)

Many controller issues can be resolved by putting the controller through a complete power cycle. To power cycle your controller:

Press and hold the Xbox button  for 5-10 seconds, until the controller turns off.

Wait a few seconds, then press and hold the Xbox button  again to turn the controller back on.

My Xbox 360 controller isn't working. Whenever I even touch the Right trigger, it turns off. What do I do?

All right. I know this one is going to try your patience but can you check the batteries and make sure you didn't put them in backwards?

The batteries aren't loose at all, it is quite a snug fit
