My xbox controller is connected but none of the buttons work

I've tried resyncing the controller I've tried the power cycle thing but nothing is working its still connected but none of the buttons or sticks work, it's done this before and doing the power cycle thing worked but not this time. I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue because I've only had it for 8 months I've never dropped it or bashed it, but one thing I think might be a factor is that I've run out of batteries and just plugged it in and played it with a cable but with my limited knowledge of tech I'm lead to believe that shouldn't affect it
