My wireless Xbox One Controller stopped working with USB cable

Hey there,

There's a problem that occurred recently regarding the connectivity between my Xbox One Controller and my PC. I read some posts online on how to solve this (the controller vibrates on connection but the light doesn't go on). I went to the Device Manager and uninstalled the device, restarted my PC thrice and I have the latest Win10 version. The device didn't appear since.

What can I do? I don't have an actual Xbox, it's just the controller.

Sorry bit there is no 'correct 360 controller cable'.

A 360 wireless controller remains wireless even when plugged in, it does not become wired if you connect via USB. The reason is because the controller isn't designed to send data down a USB cable.

Only the Xbox One controller works wired and wireless.

I'm sorry to hear your controller is having trouble connecting to your PC.

Try using different USB ports, and a different USB cable to connect to the PC to rule out the cable.

Since you deleted the driver, restarting your PC should have searched for the drivers, check for new updates on your PC. (Start > Settings > Update & security > Check for updates).

If there are no updates available - try opening Device Manager again (Win+X > Device Manager) then right click Universal Serial Bus controllers and click "Scan for Hardware Changes" so it can find any missing drivers.

Additionally, you should install the Xbox Accessories App (Get Xbox Accessories - Microsoft Store) and see if the controller appears when you plug it in with the USB cable. You can update your controller from here which may resolve any controller issues you had prior.

You are talking about the Xbox One controller, right? The Xbox 360 wireless controller won't work even if using a USB cable.

the answer is it is a wireless controller they dont work with the usb charging cable ive tried it on windows 7 and 10 you need a proper wired controller apparently.

That's true for 360 controllers, but not Xbox One. The Xbox One controllers work wired and via wireless on PC. My wiress controllers all work fine via the micro USB cable on my PC.

Windows 7 doesn't come with drivers built in to the OS though, they may need need to be downloaded manually if Windows update isn't picking up the controller.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear about the issue with the Xbox One Wireless controller. Using a USB is a great idea. With a USB cable attached, your wireless controller converts to a wired controller.
