My wireless adapter hardware went out on my Xbox One Elite

That adapter will WORK with the Elite controller.

When I got my Oculus Rift, the set included the older model of the Xbox Wireless USB Adapter with a Xbox controller, and my Elite Controller works on my Windows 10 PC with that adapter.

The newer version is simply a bit smaller.

So you do NOT need a special "Elite" wireless adapter (which doesn't exist).

I am using a wire but will shortly using wireless with the Xbox wireless adapter, will I have to take the adapter out to switch the Elite off?

You can use the standard Xbox Wireless Adapter with the Xbox One Elite controller, that's the best solution.

You confused me when you said WI-FI. As WI-FI is usually in reference to a wireless connection to your modem suppling an internet connection to a given device. Not a short way of saying wireless. But yes, there are 3 options, Wired, Bluetooth, and wireless.

Any wireless Xbox One controller will pair with the
Wireless adapter.
