My storage is not adding up?

Due to the way storage space is calculated, all storage devices have less than what is advertises as usable space. Then for use on Xbox, there are system files added to the storage device that are needed to run the console. So what you're getting is about right.

Ok, but i know someone who has the exact xbox as me with more games and more used up storage then me and they still have more left over storage than what I have and they do not have anything that gives then extra storage

Do they also have an external drive or the optional Seagate Expansion unit connected to their Series S?

Be aware that while the Xbox is advertised as having a 512GB drive the way the units are worked out on a technical level are different. Firstly the drive itself is actually around 476GB (see explanation below) and secondly, a further 112GB is utilised by the OS for system files, cache and the new Series X|S 'Auto Resume' feature.

The units used to describe drive sizes can be confusing. Storage manufacturers often use the term "gigabyte" to refer to 1000 million bytes (1000 x 1000 x 1000), while many computer operating systems, consoles and other software use the term "gigabyte" to refer to 1024 x 1024 x 1024 (1024 x 1024 = 1,048,576) bytes. This difference of about 7% means that a drive that is advertised as having a certain number of gigabytes may appear to be somewhat smaller when you view it on your system.

For example, a micro SD card for use in say a Digital camera is advertised as '32GB', but in actual fact its useable storage is around 29.8GB.

I looked into the space taken up by my apps and it totals to around 200mb so I don’t think that’s my issue. I have had an issue downloading a game but it was because my internal storage didn’t have enough space because of my issue. Could it be a problem with my Xbox or it’s hardware?

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with your console's storage.

To clarify, have you also taken into account storage space occupied by apps?
You can see all the apps installed on your console's internal storage by going to My Games and Apps > Apps > Filter > Storage device > Internal storage.

Have you recently experienced any installation issues with a game? or an error message letting you know a game was corrupted perhaps? Although rare, sometimes a game will still take storage space even after uninstalling it.
