my sons xbox was hacked

My son's Xbox account was hacked. The hacker was using racist and profane comments...posing as my son. He then deleted everything my son had saved in the game. Can this saved information be recovered?

...Do i get the police involved as it is theft? Also i have taken my card off and paypal off the Xbox too.

You can try to get the police involved in this case.

However, if your kid didn't use Two Step Verification and other security measures on his account, it's like asking the police for help after someone robbed your house because you intentionally left your front door open while you were away.

To give the police as much information as possible check when and where your son's Microsoft Account was used

This page will show the IP address from which your son's account signed in during this time.

Take a record of that information and provide that to the police, so they can work with Microsoft and that person's Internet Provider to find the person behind that theft.

In the mean time, take a few steps to prevent this from happening again:

Have your son go to
https://account.live.com/Proofs/Manage and have him enable Two Step Verification.

If he owns a Smartphone (iOS, Android or even Windows Phone, which might not work anymore), he can install a free Authenticator App and tie it to his own account.

That way, whenever a hacker somehow gains knowledge of your son's login data and password, and tries to sign in from a new device, the Live service will ask for a code number or a confirmation via Smartphone to continue the log in process.

Without access to the Smartphone, the hacker can't sign into your son's account.

While on that page, make sure that the hacker didn't add their own email and phone numbers to the security info of your son's account.

If the hacker added their own information while they had access to your son's account, they can recover the account after the password was changed by sending the recovery information to their phone number or email.

If your son also used the same password on their email account, change that password as well, as the hacker might use the compromised email to recover the account again.

You have to work with your bank on the credit and xbox support to report the hacked account.
