My Segate Hard drive stopped working randomly

So ive had this hard drive for about 1 year and a half and it just stopped working randomly and ive tried taking it out and doing anything possible and i do not know what to do anymore. It is a external hard drive.

Should I get a backup or expansion hard drive

I want to get a Segate 5T external hard drive for my xbox one. I cant decide between the expansion or backup.

 

My hard drive stopped working

This morning my fat console drive stopped working, I already ordered a new one but have several flash drives and external drives sitting around. Is it possible to use one of them to recover my account and play on Xbox live with until my new drive arrives?
Otherwise it's going to be a pretty boring week, don't care about my game saves and what not since they are lost on the old drive.
