My Original Xbox console is no longer reading DVD game discs

Hi there

My original console from way back in 2002, or thereabouts, is reading CD audio discs perfectly but not even recognising game discs. It's been in storage up in my loft space for a few years and I've dug it out as part of a clear-out. I wanted to see if I
could have some fun with it with my 9 year old boy but.....no joy so far. If I need to replace the drive, how hard is that and would I need a particular type? Is there anything else I can do to try and resurrect whatever might be faulty with the drive? Thanks

Hi,

To put it simply, the Blu-ray drive has two laser's built into the drive. One for reading DVD discs and the other to read Blu-ray discs. Xbox 360 games and DVD films use the DVD disc format, while Xbox One and Series X|S discs use Blu-ray discs. If one or the other lasers fail, the console will be able to read one format but not the other.

This isn't something you can fix yourself. You would either need a new console or get your console repaired. Note however that the original Xbox One is no longer supported for repairs from Microsoft.

Thanks. I've been thinking the same thing but don't know for sure whether replacements would still be available, or for how much. A replacement machine is clearly another option and I could possibly swap the drive in to mine

I was wondering whether anyone out there had personal experience of either option and might know better then me ;-)

Yeah. I've already clocked some YT videos - can't see that replacing the drive would be terribly difficult, but how easy are they to get hold of and where from?

Unfortunately I don't have any experience on the classic, and it's not allowed to give any explanation on this kind of repair on this forum ;-)

But on Reddit, among others, you can find people with whom you can share this kind of information and who can help you more precisely !
