My gamertag has been changed?

Hi,

I tried to sign into my profile on my Xbox360 today and it displayed the 'Disconnected from Xbox Live' popup and then 'cannot access profile, please download profile to fix'.

I tested network settings and could connect to network/internet/xbox live.

So I clicked "Cannot access profile" above the "Download Profile" option, and it told me there was a system update to download. Something like 113mb. So i did, and tried to download my profile again, successfully, except my gamertag is not my gamertag...
it's been changed to a random name.

Is this a security breach? I wish to have my original gamertag back.

Please advise.

My gamertag has been changed! I decided to play my xbox on friday and the gamertag that appears is . i wouldve never made a dumb name like or let xbox generate one for me.

I spoke to an agent about it, and i was told that there has been a system generated change to my gamertag, and i was wondering if i can change it back without paying.

 

Has my gamertag been banned?

If it says you have been suspended until a certain date, then you would need to post here to find out why -

If it says you have been suspended because of a payment issue, then check your account at
https://billing.microsoft.com to see if you have a balance you owe. You would have to pay off that balance before you can add a prepaid card.

 

It's not a security breach. You would have been given a forced name change because your gamertag violated the code of conduct. You would need to go to
http://enforcement.xbox.com for information about why it was changed.

 

Thanks for the reply, are you an official XboxLive staff member? And you can verify that my existing gamertag was violating the CoC? Can you tell me which part of the CoC it was violating?

Topics or content of a sexual nature

Hate speech

Controversial religious topics

Notorious people or organizations

Sensitive current or historical events

...because it certainly wasn't any of the above.

 

I'm not a member of support and support won't have information about your gamertag change. The enforcement team are the only ones who would have information about that which is why you'd need to go to the enforcement site I gave you to see why your tag was
changed.

 

Yep... it was a forced name change. And now Microsoft are charging me £7.99 to change it.

What an absolute scam.

My previous tag did not violate the rules in any way whatsoever. There isn't even an appeal option to get someone with some common sense to review the decision.

I genuinely can't believe how underhanded this is by Microsoft - a) allowing names to be chosen that, for whatever misguided or juvenile reason, they think violate CoC terms, then b) forcing it to be changed without appeal, and then c) forcing people to
pay money to change it to anything other than what they set it to.

I'd like someone to explain to me why it costs money to alter data already contained in an existing database that is modified remotely? Utterly ludicrous.

 

Hey there, FlatJoey. Any references to something sexual in nature, drugs, violence, or anything else in the CoC, even if it's not explicitly saying any of those things, are against the CoC and will be removed from the service. If you receive 1 report on
that account, a forced gamertag change may happen. These reports are reviewed by humans daily, and are rarely reversed.

Forced gamertag changes used to be free, however that was changed several years ago to where users now need to pay to be able to get a new gamertag. It was found that users were being abusive of this and if you would like to get a new gamertag, you will
need to pay for it.
