My external hard drive isn't working

Its a Seagate Back up Plus and I did run the tests and Fix all, Long Generic, Smart test failed, Short generic, and Short drive test passed. I also looked up my SN and MN to see if It is under warranty and it is in fact for another year, so I plan to get
another one from them for now. Also when I try to play games with out the HDD, it runs fine. The reason I got the HDD is because my Console is a only 500GBs.

mm, Regrettably, Xbox can't help you with external products.. :/ If you still have a warranty on the drive, have you contacted Seagate Support?

If nobody there can help, the last resort, would be to take it to a IT specialist to check that there is current being maintained through the caddy or drive, or to simply buy a new drive. Not much else that we can advise.

you said, you ran Diagnostics, was that Windows diagnostics or a tool specifically from the external hard drive brand itself?

Also be sure to try and see if there is a different behavior when the game is installed on the Xbox One's hard drive, to determine if it's console related or not. (Make sure the external hdd is disconnected at the time when you try and start the game)

I had the exact same issue - Toshiba 1TB drive that has worked for years. After this past update, I noticed several slowing issues, booting up issues etc. Then over the weekend, my Xbox just did not recognize the drive. Changed USB ports, restarted
etc nothing worked. I assumed due to the age of the drive that it had failed. I plugged into my PC and realized the Xbox Formatting is not readable on any PC. I ran a diagnostic tool which indicated that the drive was having some reading issues. I ran
recovery but was unable to pull any of the data. I then ran out and purchased a new external. After talking with a co-worker today, he had the exact same issue - but found when he plugged his external in an offline Xbox (one not up to date) it worked fine.
On a hunch I came home, and completely formatted and erased the "failed" drive and sure enough, it works now with my PC. Ran diagnostics, no error on the drive. Plug into my Xbox, runs the initial Formatting of the drive. Long story short, it appears the
latest update somehow interfered with the workings of my external drive. I had my saves backed up - but I don't want to run through the headache of my new external potentially "failing" again.
