My download speed is absolute garbage!

That doesn't sound that bad but never look at my numbers how long does a digital game take to download at that speed?

 

It's not your fault. Blame 21st century technology. Blame the state of the internet infrastructure. I have Vodafone NZ 100mb/s download 10mb/s upload. So many people (nearly everyone pretty much), uses the internet, and the internet infrastructure and companies
may struggle to keep up with their servers. That's why servers have to undergo maintenance.

 

What are your actual speeds meant to be as per your ISP?

I'm on fibre (100 Mbs Dl/20 Mbs UL) and while not super fast for fibre its more than enough for gaming. My X1S is hooked up via WiFi (5Ghz signal) with port forwarded and it averages 80-90Mbs DL but have seen it peak to 117 - 135 Mbs which I thought was
weird.

 

I am curious as well about the actual ISP Connection speed. I can't imagine it would be such a drastic hit from just WiFi alone. It seems there are bigger issues then just the Home Network.

Side note- Lei Fang, its not too bad, I had those speeds in 2005 on my Launch Xbox 360.

I've recently increased my speed from 50meg to 200meg and because I play in a different room to the router I use TP Links which makes it wired, but not quite ethernet wired. Therefore my download speed is anywhere from 20.32Mbps to 61.56Mbps and upload is
11.98Mpbs which I think is a disgrace!

When downloading games it does bounce around 35 - 46Mbps, but has been known to drop to 12Mbps.

I rang VirginMedia about this (and another issue I had) and the technician I spoke to said to ignore the Detailed Network Statistic speed because it's a false representation and will be different every time. I also mentioned to download speed for games because
if I'm paying for 200meg I expect at least 100Mbps but he said mid 40's is actually a decent speed. He also said Microsoft tend to limit the speed at which a game can download which I think is codswallop!!!

All in all, I haven't noticed a difference with Xbox since I upped my speed. Just a big con or can someone tell me they download games at 100+Mbps in Britain! Cheers.

Upon further inspection, I think I found that reason that I have garbage downloads speed. I don't know much about how Wi-Fi works so here goes nothing

Like i said before, my Wi-Fi Signal Strenght is 1 out of 4 bars without using my Wi-Fi Range Extender.

I get 4 out of 4 Wi-Fi Signal Strenght using my Wi-Fi Range Extender.

The best way to describe my set-up is this.

Imagine a square box to represent the Game Room.

I am forced to set-up my Xbox One in the Top Middle part of the Square because it is closest to the Wi-Fi Range Extender.

Any further and the Wi-Fi Signal Strenght will drop to 2 out of 4 bars.

The Wi-Fi Range Extender has to be located on the Top Left Corner of the Square because the Wi-Fi Signal coming from the left outside of the wall.

The distance from the Wi-Fi Range Extender to my Xbox One is 5 feet

Also located in the Top Left Corner is a Circuit Breaker

Circuit Breaker is located 5 feet away from the Xbox One also

Please tell me that the Circuit Breaker isn't affecting my Wi-Fi

Also, is it actually confirmed that Xbox Live purposely limits the download speed slower even though your ISP is providing fast download speeds?

If this is true, that would be so messed up indeed.

Just like any other internet server, they have to do load balancing or it will cause more issues. Last time Xbox Live was taken down by DDOS attacks, it took like 250Gbps of traffic to shut it down.

The likely issue is the wireless setup, if your range extender is in the same room as the Xbox, then that is part of the issue, you need to realize that if your Xbox is getting 1 bar, and your range extender is right by the Xbox, then your range extender
is getting poor signal as well, move the range extender closer to the router.

And then we move onto wireless, is the router and range extender using the 5Ghz band? If either are using 2.4Ghz, then that'll reduce the bandwidth.

Unbelievable..... and it was a free upgrade from my old plan plus I got a 4K PVR with it....

 

Obviously your service provider speeds are important as I am sure some will and probably already have pointed out. And if the following is a repeat of others sorry in advance.

Where is your wifi extender? Make sure it has good connection. I am not saying you did not or have not done this. But, if the extender is in a place where devices get 1 bar I would say that can be the issue. IF, this is important, you are getting better
speeds near to your main wifi point. I have seen people use these extenders and put them in places where the connection strength is "1 bar" and tests fairly weak. Then when the put in the extender it seems to make it a much stronger connection. Only the
extender is not getting a great connection so it this setup can be slower than it should.

I will say for a wired connection here is what I have done at my place. Not sure if it is possible at yours but just a possible suggestion. I put in a jack so I could connect a port on my wifi to it with a short cable. That port was connected to a wire
that was ran straight under the house to the other new jack at the destination. Making this run almost straight and not having to go around stuff made if much shorter. On that jack I put I another router and that is the access point for a lot of wifi devices
in my house. Speeds are fantastic on that connection. Not as fast as my main connection that I use but even with 3 xbox consoles, 3 phones, and 4 tablets they all have fast connection. And, if you can do that and get that one port to your xbox it could
really speed things up. Not sure but your ISP should be able to do this if you cannot. Just call and ask them. They do it here, not very high $$ wise, but I would rather do it myself.

 

My xbox 1 says my wireless strength is 100%. Its only a couple of metres from the router. ÑZ ISPs recommend you use their modems as they are more tuned to the network. If you use their modems they will help if you have technical difficulties with the modem.
If you use your own modem, theyll just refer you to the manufacturer of that modem... LOL. I blame the Internet Infrastructure. Simple.

 

And im with Vodafone NZ get 100 down 10 up.

I moved the Wi-Fi Range Extender closer to the Router and here is what my Xbox One is telling me now

Upload Speed = 20 Mbps (Common low) to 30 Mbps (Common High) with 34 Mbps (Rare High)

Packet Loss = 0%

Latency = 84

Wireless Strenght = 100%

MTU = 1480

I get 6mbps down and only 1 up (usually less). It's problematic at times, but usually stable, espepecially since I got my entire house hardwired about a year ago.

 

@ OP. I am sorry about your current spped issues. If you lived by me or the opposite then I would come over and rewire your entire network through your wall's free of charge. I have my network rewired just about every three years. Staying up on the latest
hardware and software can be very tasking, but when the job is done correctly it can be very satisfying seeing your upload and download stay on a consistent and FAST speed.

 

Hi Lei Fang DOAX3 Please check if your wifi router and range extender both support the 5Ghz frequency, I they both do support this try and connect to this as it should hopefully further improve your download speeds.
