@Zero, it makes less sense to me now than it did before. lol

Most people I've seen talking (if memory serves) about the X1 and it's advanced diagnostic network tool have said it connects to their (MS's) server in Washington? Which is why I used a server in Washington to compare my PC test to my X1... and the numbers
were nearly identical. Identically lower than they should have been also BTW.

I expect to see a difference between a distant server and one that is very close, which I did. I didn't expect to see a difference so large though. 93D locally vs 25D non-local just doesn't add up to me. Not to mention it doesn't explain why 75D non-local was,
until a few weeks ago, a rock solid number that literally never changed before the decimal point and only varied occasionally after it, since I got my X1.

How do you check where the XB1 connects to for the speed test?

for work, i'm using an enterprise class router at home that is capable of packet sniffing, so i shut off everything other than the port my X1 was connected to and ran a speed test, i forget what IP address it was, but according to the information provided
on a simple IP tools site, that range of IP addresses were registered in the Virginia area.

    @Blue

they very well could have another speed test server in Washington, it would make sense to have multiple speed test servers for different regions, but i really haven't done much investigating past looking up the IP address that i saw during the speed test
    my X1 was doing.

there are many things that could effect the speeds, if your DNS server is not routing traffic through the most efficient path, other internet carriers having some sort of issue or hitting capacity on a circuit, that is also why a lot of internet providers
will have their own speed test site to test with, because they only guarantee the speeds you're paying for while on their network, because once they pass your traffic onto their carrier it is beyond their control.

I picked up ROTTR and BM Arkham Knight for less than half price each. (Wallyworld)

ROTTR is a Wonderful game BTW, and for me at least. Hard to put down once you begin playing it.

  6. @brand... that's our local nickname for Walmart.

@Zero. Arrggghhh. There seems to be 2 different statements about DNS servers. One says they do the look-up and then route traffic appropriately, the other says they do nothing but the look-up. BTW, I actually poked around on my ISP's website and found a
post that stated DNS servers do nothing but look-up the numerical address and have nothing to do with the actual routing... that post was verified by my ISP's support personnel.

Would be nice to know which is true... not that it'd do me much good now. My DNS servers are now IPv6 and I can't seem to change them, so I'm stuck with what's there. Unless I want to buy a whole new modem and router.

DNS is a look up, so when you type google.com into a web browser, it hits the DNS server and it says that the IP address for google.com is 216.58.216.78 and then th request for google.com is pointed to a router or server that knows where that IP address
is. now, depending on which DNS server you use, it might resolve a different IP address that might reside somewhere else. using nslookup in Windows, i can tell you that my default DNS resolves google.com to 216.58.216.78, but if i use Google's DNS of 8.8.8.8
    and resolve google.com i get 216.58.216.206.

so if i did a trace route from my computer using my default DNS, and then did a trace route using Google's DNS, the results will be different because of the different IP addresses the DNS resolves.

in the strictest sense, DNS does not route traffic, there is what's called the OSI model and it is a template for networking, it starts at layer 1, which is the psychical layer, that is the actual hardware for networking, cables and switches, actual routing
happens on layer 3, the network layer, DNS is actually layer 7(the last layer), which is the application layer.

that is a very basic description and a small peek into networking.

Well, seems Batman Arkham Knight will not work. Error 0x87de2716

Traced it on the forums and I am not alone. Seems if you delete it in order to try getting it working again and you won't be able to redownload it.

So I'll just wait it out for a day or two.

  9. Thanks Zero. I have some basic (albeit dated knowledge) of electronics/PCs, so although your explanation isn't something I can "understand perfectly" I can follow it well enough to get the concept.

Electro thought you bought it physical at "Wallyworld"?

  11. Batman I bought via XB XBMP sale on Monday. It was ROTTR (Physical disc) I picked at WM for 38 bucks.

Sorry for the confusion but in my excitment to play a darn good campaign game, (ROTTR) I forgot to proof read before posting.

ROTTR just might get me to purchase my 1st season pass... Umm, around July I think.

Gunslinger was a good game, wouldn't mind playing that again! Have you played any One titles yet Electro? Wondered what your first impression was? What did you get with it, Batman?

    Day 3 sounded really exciting!

It's Day 716 for me. (for those doing the math, I was a
    Day 23 buyer!)

Well, on my 2nd console it's only Day 500ish (I'm not doing the math on that One) I purchased a kinectless bundle when they came out.

As thrilling as it would be for me to do a day by day of
MY experience, I'll pass but I will say this...

Oh wait... I should add I'm a preview member since that program started... (some refer to that as beta testing)

    With that said,
BOTH of my Xbox Ones are still doing fine. I've never replaced a controller even! No extended warranties! The preview program never broke my One! (all these things are so exciting I should have made a day by day thread but that would have been very boring
after the first week because there's only so many "I'm having fun playing games on my Xbox One!" a person can take before they find it boring!)

So just to end this... if I had bought an Xbox One that had had any issues what so ever that I didn't like, I wouldn't have wasted any time returning it for a refund. I certainly would have never bought another One. (no
pun intended) :) That may sound mean, like I don't care if someone had problems with their one. That would be correct. I don't care about other people's One's. I only care about mine... and mine are fine.
    (I probably already said that)

    *
Fun Fact - Anyone who bought their Xbox One on Day 1
    has now had their's 738
    days!
