    You need a HDD to be able to install some games and content. Keep in mind that you can only install MS certified HDDs, otherwise some models will not work. Which model do you have?

    if the console itself doesn't have any storage then some might be needed for the console to run. You might be able to connect a usb storage device to see if it will work. See this link for more information:

    What exactly happens when you try to power the console on when it's connected to the TV?

    For example power supply light, what color is it, does the console itself turn on?

    yes the console does work without my hd and unless there is something i cant see going on, ive inserted my hd properly. i just bought the console like an hour ago

    Yes, your controller will not connect without the HD lead connected to the TV.

    The xbox loading screen will not progress without the HD lead connected, so the console never gets to the "connect controller" section.
