Mute icon is crossed off?

You set the volume on the TV to zero or "mute" (if the latter doesn't leave a MUTE icon on the screen). There are no options to turn it off on the console.

I have muted it but the icon is till there

if I turn the sensor off will it turn off the kinect

The icon is a mic with a line through it, sound mute is a speaker with a line or cross through it. I should know the difference as I have been a tv engineer for over 40years! But thank you for the suggestion.

Mute icon is always displayed ( mic with line through it ) I was assuming the headset is not an "off breed" it is a turtle beach XBOX recon50x. Starting parties and testing in all aspects of the xbox nothing changes the icon and under settings the volume
and mute buttons are "greyed out" and not accessible.

If the problem persists:

• Try your Xbox One Stereo Headset
  with another device, such as a laptop, to see if the headset is working. If not, the headset will need to be replaced.
  
• Try your Headset on another
  controller, if you can. If the headset works on the second controller, try
  updating the first controlleragain.
  If that fails, the controller will need to be replaced. To order a replacement, go to the
  Xbox Online Service Center.
