this is so frustrating then. clearly an Xbox issue. both my controllers work, ran all the updates, headset works in my phone, uninstalled everything and reset back to factory defaults, reloaded account back up and pooof here's the mute symbol back on screen!!!!!!!

I have the same issue, I have had response from the xbox when I plugged my headset in and the xbox showed connection. Then seconds later the xbox said it couldn't find my microphone. So the microphone, controller and connection work with a fully functioning
xbox. Which since the social and communication issue, can't find the mircophone and permanently show a mute sign. Which is no reason to buy a new controller, or close a post. it's to help fix it as this issue has been going on since xbox one was first sold!
    check google!

I would appreciate assistance but the update for the controller is not working and not the many resets options.

oh .. And I also ran a check on my controllers and made sure they were both updated. I've already been onto Microsoft and after an hour we still couldn't get rid of the mute symbol

    Hello there,

Thank you for posting here on the Xbox forums. Have you been able to test out your headset using a different controller by any chance? If the headset works on other devices, this usually means that the controller needs to be updated or

    replaced.

hi, I've tried it on both my controllers and it doesn't work on either. I've tried them in my phone and they work fine. I thought be resetting my console it would have got rid of the problem but the mute symbol just popped straight back up
