    Yeah totally agree.

Seems like every manufacturer does things differently. If they all followed UPnP specs properly then everyone would have open NATs but unfortunately they are all too lazy to do this causing no end of problems for console users.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. But to be honest, this is a brutally difficult problem to trace.

For example, each time I start up both consoles, it's a different setup. Most of the time it's moderate/moderate. Sometimes it's open/moderate. Sometimes open/strict. Because of that, trying to track down a set of "working" criteria is nearly impossible.

I did try disabling static IPs. This ended up in strict/open. But is that because of DHCP? Or just because that happened to be the luck of the draw?

I disabled my web server on HTTP (80), so now I'm just forwarding HTTPS (443). No change overall. Weirdly enough, we can matchmake... sometimes. Occasionally the strict xbox will not see party invites. So it's not the end of the world but it is rather inconvenient
and I do believe results in the network errors we are seeing where connections are punted back to lobby (e.g., in Destiny).

I've emailed Asus and they were no help whatsoever, unable to shed light on the UPnP or IDGP nuances of their devices.

Well if you are running a webserver on your site as well, there is an interesting setup using a dedicated server with Hyper-V to emulate a DD-WRT router which works properly with more than one Xbox One on the same network.

    You find that discussion at
    forums.xbox.com/.../4979036.aspx
at the later posts between spwanstah and me on that thread.

The direct description on that can be found here:

    www.isolation.se/how-to-setup-a-virtual-dd-wrt-router-with-hyper-v

I think that's a quite interesting solution if you are already having an additional server running at your end.

(Btw, the Xbox does not need to have the ports 53 and 80 forwarded, it just needs to be able to use them for outgoing traffic.)

Interesting and innovative idea, but ultimately not possible because my server is a synology box.

Is there a confirmed working router, two consoles, both open? Might be easier for me to just pick one up. Asus is baffled as to why it's occurring and believes it should be fine.

Does your router support Full Cone Nat? Mostly it will if it's a modern Router. I had the same problem with my ISP with routers, I had a NAT setup that wasn't allowing good connections through Multiple Gateways. I would contact my ISP and have them come
and change your NAT settings on your Router.

There are some routers confirmed working, but that depends on your needs (internal modem, Voip, country).

Give me some of your needs and I may have a suggestion.

    Are you from Germany?

Canada. And I have no restrictions towards what router I run. Currently my setup is a cable modem that passes through (bridge) to the N66u. From there I have one AC66U as a wireless AP. The two consoles are wired to the active router (N66u). Again, with
only one xbox on, I see open NAT. When both come on, one goes moderate or occasionally even strict. Occasionally both are moderate.

So I'm fairly certain the issue is UPnP related. If someone can confirm two open NAT consoles on a single router, I'll just go buy it at this point.

The confirmed router list does not speak to open NAT on multiple consoles unfortunately. Please see original post for my configuration of the N66u.

    @BobMcFly247

So the Nighthawk didn't work for me. Now I do recognize there were mixed reports on other forums and what not, but for me I didn't have any luck. Updated the firmware as well. We had both consoles on Open NAT initially, but eventually one went back to moderate.
While I do think this would be fine for most games, Destiny really seems touchy when one console is on moderate. I returned the router.

So I started to get a bit creative. Turns out my ISP does offer a second dynamic IP on my internet plan, so I picked that up and switched one of the consoles off to it's own connection. Done. I'm disappointed it had to come to this, and in the end sort of
a cheating victory, but it does solve my problem!

Well ok. Too bad the nighthawk did not work for you, but at least nice to hear you solved the problem.

And yes, Destiny indeed is tricky in connection problems, but as this is on their end they may hopefully fix it one day.

Multiple Xbox One Consoles, One Router, Open and Moderate NAT

Thought I would type a problem summary for anyone Googling, which is picking up significantly with Destiny connection errors.

When running two Xbox One consoles on one router, achieving two Open NAT's will be very difficult. The list of routers supporting multiple consoles is not confirmed, though it is generally considered that the Netgear Nighthawk N8000 is a good choice. Personally,
I tried this very router and was left with Open on one console and Moderate on another.

Open and Moderate will generally be "good enough" for most games but not sufficient for Destiny.

    Mythbusting:

    • Port forwarding is NOT a solution as it can only forward ports to one address.
      • If you only have one console, then yes, you can port forward.
      • Port 88 (UDP)
      • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
      • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
      • Port 80 (TCP) forwarding not needed for Port 80!
      • Port 500 (UDP)
      • UDP Port 3544 (UDP)
      • UDP Port 4500 (UDP)
    • Similarly, port triggering will not provide any support either as this is not the purpose of triggering.
    • Placing one console in DMZ and the other on port forwarding will cause conflicts.
    • The primary issue is UPnP which MUST be used.
    • There is potential for static IPs to fix the issue (limited success).
      • Assign static IPs to your consoles within the router, but leave the Xbox One consoles IP settings to "Automatic".
      • Do not manually assign the static IP in the console itself.
An ideal solution is to use two IPs if you can; ask your ISP about this. You may be able to install a switch just after your modem (so it would go outside-->your house-->modem-->switch) From the switch, hook up your router to one port (and one xboxv to the
router) and the other xbox on another port. If you have two IPs from your provider, then this will work for you.

TL;DR: UPnP is mandatory for two consoles on one network. Obtaining Open NATs on both consoles is dependent on how well UPnP is implemented on the router. The Netgear Nighthawk has a good track record but your mileage may vary. Using two
IPs is the surefire solution if possible.

Just one addition to you: as well as port 80 is not needed to be forwarded neither does port 53.

This is a myth that they need to be forwarded where they just need to be able to be used by the Xbox.

  15. Any luck with getting 2 xbox ones open on a router without having a second ip from isp?
