MS/Xbox wont take payment from Child's credit to change their gamertag.

If his Microsoft balance can't be used for gamertag change, you need to use a debit/credit card as a payment option. You can then remove it once it's successful. The remaining balance on his account can still be used to purchase other stuff.

what you did is incorrect which is why you got the result you got

1st and foremost

child accounts on family plans cannot have a creditcard thats what the master account is for

2nd from the sounds of it you purchased the 800 ms points for the gamertag from the creditcard

thats not a bug

you just werent reading what you were doing

a child account cannot charge anything to the parental account including ms points for gamertag

thats not how family plan works

the only way to get 800mspoints for a family member on the family plan is not direct purchase

the primary account must purchase 800ms points and then allowance to the child account and you apply the gamertag change



you do not buy the gamertag change directly from the card from his account



only the primary account can have a creditcard on it any other account will have their creditcard info deleted upon joining the family plan

a child account cannot make a gamertag change without 800 ms points since they cannot buy using their parents account

the primary must purchase the 800ms points then allowance it to the child account then the gamertag gets changed



if a child account in a family plan tries to make a purchase it will say no payment method or not enough ms points if there is no ms points

im going to gather this is most likely the case

You need a backup credit card or payment, not only the $1, so if you don't cancel, MS needs to be sure they can take money from the backup payment

Gamertag changes require a credit card to be on file. That's why the payment process won't complete.

No, the first step is change payment option. The MS balance is greyed out and cannot be selected. You can select a credit card there but then it takes you to confirm purchase and no extra step of using the MS balance toward the purchase.

Basically the MS balance is useless on most things except for the occasional XBLA game maybe.
