Netflix App on Xbox One S does not offer Ultra HD option

Despite a proper subscription on Netflix for UHD/4K, a supported 4k-TV and a Receiver that supports HDPC 2.2, I am not able to play 4k movies from the xbox's Netflix app; hence the option at the movies is not even available (only HD).

I've tested network, playing Netflix 4k movies directly using the SmartTv (works fine)... Xbox One S is updated and Netflix App was uninstalled and installed again.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks

do not know but I definitely want it to happen. I'd hate to stream 4k content when most internet connections can't handle it. the trick imo would we be able to download and then run the 4k content uncompressed.

I wouldn't expect anything just yet 4K is still in a state of flux.

Due to tech/legal reasons a huge spanner was thrown in the works (HEVC became toxic for streaming), many are still waiting for the dust to settle.

The Xbox One S can handle 4K video, it's just many are biding their time and do not want to pay the various groups behind HEVC their outrageous licensing fees (every time a video is streamed using HEVC!)

Replacement video tech is in the works, the Xbox One S should have no issues handling it but it's a matter of time.

@A8T8 that might be the case. Except several TVs, new Rokus, 4K players and so on are supporting 4k streaming. Not to mention Amazon video, Netflix and so on.

Yes you can support 4K streaming but they are not the ones who pay money.

If you are a company (YouTube, Microsoft, Netflix etc) and stream a video using HEVC you must now pay two of the three groups behind HEVC for the privilege of using it every single time a video is streamed by an end user!

Naturally that takes a cut out of the profits from the above companies and have no desire to tolerate this situation any longer than they need to. This is why HEVC is now toxic and is on it's way out unless a miracle happens.

A whole bunch of companies have formed the alliance for open media and are working on a proper replacement for HEVC called AV1 and is due in another year or two.

In the interim, what some are doing is using VP9X from Google which is their 4K YouTube codec as a replacement for HEVC until AV1 is ready to go, this is what Netflix is doing.

Just to add, (as there is no edit function) Microsoft has a decision to make,

    1) Pay part of their profits to HEVC

    2) Use VP9X which is itself a lot of work as it was only meant for Google's internal use, Netflix has done some work in adapting it to their video production chain.

    3) Wait for AV1 for which it is big backer.

Edge (win 10 browser) does now have software VP9 support and there is some hardware decoding support for VP9 in the GPU used on the Xbox so it could do a mix of software and partial hardware decoding as MS owns all the software/hardware stack on the Xbox.

They probably should go with VP9 to be on the safe side as the time table for AV1 is too aggressive/optimistic in my opinion.

Just to close the door on this. They do have it now, with HDR as well. Only a couple movies so far, but it is here and works pretty well.
