moving son's gamertag

I hope someone can help with this. When my son got his Xbox One S in Dec, he rushed and set it up. When he did he just logged in with my Microsoft email and it created a gamertag for him. But now, as I have leanred more about the family settings, etc,
I want to move his existing gamertag to a new email and disassociate his gamer tag from my account. I dont want him to lose his progress associated with this gamertag. Is this possible? I have googled it and there are hits, but none seem to work. Open
to suggestions.

You have to remove him as family member in the account settings. After that you can create an another gamertag with a new email adress.

I believe you may have to remove him as family member in the account settings and create an email for his account.

before we start listing any ideas you may have tried, what have you done? Have you gone into your account settings and tried switching the email address used?

If your email account is a Microsoft one (@outlook.com, @live.com, @hotmail.com) then you won't be able to alter the email. Deleting it will delete your whole Microsoft account. If it is not a Microsoft email account then you should be able to log into https://account.microsoft.com
and add a new email alias, once set up and confirmed as the main one, you can delete your email. As I said this only works if you do not us a Microsoft email account.

You could try changing the primary email account with the Gamertag. You will need to set him up an email of his own and then change the email address associated with the Xbox Live account. This should release your email from his gamertag, you may need
to change the family settings first.
