  1. Moving data from one drive to another to reduce fragmentation

Hello everybody. I have a 250gb HDD currently and install/uninstall things quite frequently.

I suspect that this means that the drive is somewhat fragmented - one example of this is that when playing GTA IV, ocassionally I get an in game error message about checking my internet connection as 'the title is having trouble accessing content needed
to progress to gameplay'. This even happens in single-player, so I suspect that the files are loading too slowly. My friends don't seem to get this message.

What I want to know is; if I buy a new 500GB drive and a transfer cable, will this essesntially move an 'image' of the current state of the files over onto the new drive, or will the files be defragmented and consolidated as they are moved over? I don't really
want to have to move everything over by flash drive as this will take hours and hours, but I will if performance is likely to be improved.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

    :)

The 250GB console comes with a 250GB HDD installed. If you remove the HDD, it will have no memory.

the xbox 360 slim with the 250 gig hard rive doesn't use the same tpye of hardrive the arcade - elites did

its technically internal hardrive because thats where its located

on the right side of the console is a mini flap and a pull tag that reads 250 GB if you pull on this a little package containing the hardrive will be there (google images xbox 360 slim hardrive to get a clearer picture)

i am considering just useing my 2 day gold membership code and uploading to the cloud but my upload rate is 60% slower than all of canada so it might take forever to uplaod even 750 KB of data and i dont have that kind of time

If you purchase a new 500GB hard drive and transfer all items over then the items will be transferred as a fresh install. Fragmentation cannot be transferred from one drive to another.

Also, when purchasing a transfer cable please make sure that the cable is an official Xbox transfer cable. 3rd party cable are notorious for failure and Xbox does not warranty 3rd party items.

  5. Thank you onyx, you are right. I don't know about a fresh install, but as i can selectively move items between drives, not just hit 'move all', then the new drive will have items written to it in an unfragmented way. Perfect. Thanks for replying though.

    USB Storage Device problem

The data transfer cable is made to move files from one hard drive to another. It's not made to work with a PC.

    Recovering account and Data transfer.

I haven't had any issues transferring data from one hard drive to another after I moved a profile. It should just overwrite the older/duplicate data of the profile you recovered.

Wishing for a new Xbox One model that i can change the hdd on myself.

If only Microsoft could invent something to move data from one hard drive to another.

Something like, oh I don't know, a transfer cable.
