Move external hard drive from one Xbox One (s) console to another (x)?

I have an externally connected USB hard drive on my Xbox One S console. All the current apps and games I use are up to date. When I attach the USB hard drive to my Xbox One X console, it recognizes the drive and I can browse the contents. However, when
I try to launch a game installed on the external drive, I will get prompted for required updates - as if the X console is not actually reading the contents of the external drive.

Is there any way to make the external drive contents recognized so I can avoid several GB worth of updates? I only have one Xbox profile and signed onto the S and X as that same user.

    :)

    Hi

The Xbox One and Xbox One S has the ability to play games directly from a suitable external hard drive and you can also use this method to move games from one Xbox One console to another one please see

the guide here about external storage
    on the Xbox One.

XBox One X and external drive

It was confirmed last night that any current external hard drive will work with the Xbox One X, however you may want to consider moving some of the games you play often over to the Xbox One X internal hard drive as it will probably load games quicker from
internal HDD than your external one.

If you're plugging into an Xbox One X, the games may well be pulling in 4K assets, if they are One X enhanced titles. On Xbox One S, there is a setting to

enable the download of 4K assets
if you intend on moving the drive between consoles.

  5. Hi,

What game or games does this message pop for? Many Xbox One games have updates specifically for the Xbox X. If your Xbox One game has a 4K assets update for example, you'll be prompted to download this when using the drive on the Xbox One X console.

The Xbox One S and original Xbox One don't support X-enhancements, so you won't be prompted for that update when using the drive on the One S.

    Please look at the
    following link
, it explains how to update games for Xbox One X enhancements, while still using a Xbox One S or original Xbox One.

It's probably pulling in the updates for the Xbox one X features.

Thanks for all the responses - yes the games I've tried do in fact have 4K assets. I didn't realize their were different file sets but it makes perfect sense.

Yep. All that 4K goodness can come at a cost in download size. Prior to the One X's launch in 2017, a system update added the option to let first-gen and One S owners download 4K-related updates in advance if they were planning on moving to One X in the
near future. The option doesn't exist on One X consoles because the 4K updates are mandatory there.

the guide here about external storage
    on the Xbox One.

The basic requirements for storing games and apps on an external drive are:

Has capacity of 256 GB or more, and

    Uses USB 3.0.

    Xbox one hard drive

You can move the External Hard Drive from the Original Xbox One to the Xbox One S. I did exactly that. You should just be able to connect the drive to your new console and not have to download anything.

I needing help with expansion hard drive

Hi Jack. My name is Kyle and I'm an independent advisor.

You need an expansion card for most Series X/S titles, as external hard drives are not fast enough to run these games. You can store these games on the hard drive but to play them you'll need to move them to internal storage or an expansion card.

Games from Xbox One or earlier and select Series X/S titles can be stored and played on an external hard drive.

Questions regarding upgrading to Xbox series x

Thank you, One more thing, Can I move a game from my attached hard drive to my console? I have fortnite installed on my attached hard drive so when I plug it in the xbox series x will I be able to move the game to my console internal hard drive and have the next gen benefit?
I believe, if games are optimised for Series X/S, you will need to download and install as the version on your external drive would be the XBox One version. You could still play that version but it wouldn't have the next gen benefits.

    External storage

I'm Samy an independent advisor. Welcome to the Xbox community. How are you?

To use an external hard drive with Xbox One it needs to be USB 3.0 and at least 128Gb. Theoretically and technically SSDs are faster but I can't tell you if on Xbox One you would feel any difference in loading time. I never had an external SSD with the console to check this.

And on Xbox One, S and X you will be able to install games on the external hard drive and play without having to move to the console's internal memory.

I think a 4TB hard drive already stores a lot of content.
