Missions

I really enjoy this game, but I am getting frustrated at it because when I play by my self encounter multiplayer ships on my island, so I have no chance of completing my mission. I understand it is a game of chance but if 1 person is playing shouldn't there
be some way of just letting single players play on a different quest then the multiplayers? Also my mission is already being completed by others when I am 3 islands away from it. Why is that?
