Minesweeper no longer working

Make sure that all updates are installed and nothing is running from the background.

Run the System file checker tool, Perform clean boot and if issue persist, try creating a new local user and set it admin then test the game. See steps below.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. Something interesting/new/strange to me happened as I was trying out each Solution/suggestion.

For each solution, from 1 to 3, I would follow the instructions and then try loading Minesweeper. The result was the same: nothing changed. I then closed Minesweeper. I then moved on to the next solution.

I did the same for solution 4 except that I forgot to close Minesweeper. I started to write a detailed description of my efforts to post as this reply. A short time later, when I returned to try solution 5, I noticed that I had not closed minesweeper. When I clicked the icon, I found that Minesweeper was open. Not only that, I played a couple of the daily challenges.

I then closed Minesweeper and shut down the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. I next opened Microsoft Solitaire Collection, clicked on Minesweeper and waited. The big white opening window appeared but nothing else happened. I waited. After a few minutes the intro page disappeared and the game options appeared. I played one or two and then shut down Minesweeper. I then repeated that process several times: start Minesweeper, wait until the game options appear, play one or two options, shut down Minesweeper. I repeated that 5 more times, but timing each process. The times between the appearance of the opening window and its disappearance – and the ability to play Minesweeper – ranged from 1:20 to 3:01. I have repeated the process several times and it always eventually brings up the Minesweeper options.

So, thanks for your efforts to help but I think something else may be happening. I have no idea. Do you or any other readers?

I think they must have had a 'bring your brat to work day' at wherever they write the 'casual' games and forgot to check the toddlers' work before releasing it. Incompetence on this scale can surely not be the work of highly trained super-qualified (and probably overpaid) 'coders', can it?

Fortunately my laptop hasn't 'updated' to the version described above, but my elderly Medion machine unfortunately has. I have therefore maintained my 'perfect' score rate using said laptop, which is now forbidden to entertain any updates of anything at all, in the hope that this will prevent the rogue version from installing itself on that machine. Incidentally, one thing which did work in the new version; those ridiculous commercials. Whilst trying to get the game to work I was shown the blasted advert for something called Bermuda farm - or some such piffle - over and over again, presumably in the hope that I might be tempted to purchase the 'Premium' version of Minesweeper. Fat chance! Maybe once they fix the bugs, but certainly not until that happy day.

So far, from the details you provided, you can try the following steps and let us know the result. You can just skip those you have done already.

Solution 1: Check the Xbox status page. If you see any services with alerts, expand the service, scroll down to Notifications, and sign in to receive a message when the service is up and running again.

Solution 2: Restart your PC or tabletNote Before you restart, save your work and close any open apps.

Select the Power icon on your Start screen, and then select Restart.

Solution 3: Check for device updates

Windows devices

1. Select the Start button . In the search box, type Update, and then select Check for updates.
   
2. If any updates are found, select Install updates.
   

Solution 4: Check for game updates

Windows devices

1. Open the Store and sign in with the account you use to play the game.
   
2. In the search box, type the name of the game. For example, type Microsoft Solitaire Collection in the search box.
   
3. On the game detail page, the button will show Open if you have the latest version. If it shows Update, select it to update your game.
   

Alternatively, you can select your account icon in the Store, and then select Downloads and Updates to see if there’s an update available for your game.

Refer to the documentation for your antivirus or firewall software to open the settings and make sure that the software is not blocking the app. If your antivirus or firewall has an app "whitelist," make sure that your Xbox games are on this list.
