    Minecraft purchased before Microsoft takeover JAVA


    So I bought minecraft a long time ago before mojang was bought out, and I had a game pass subscription as of recent, and found out that I can't play minecraft as my game pass ran out. I am at a loss of what to do as I don't understand how game pass has anything to do with the minecraft version I ran.

    You need to make sure that you're using the account where the game was purchased. Also, I just want to clarify, are you pertaining to Minecraft for Windows 10? If yes, you can check your license by signing in to https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders.

    Once you made sure that the order is there and stated as "completed", sign out and sign back in.

    Yes you have the Java Edition. Players who have purchased Minecraft: Java Edition before October 19th, 2018 can get Minecraft for Windows 10 for free by visiting their Mojang account.
    Log into account.mojang.com, and under the “My Games” heading you will find a button to claim your gift code. If you purchased Minecraft: Java Edition
    after October 19th, 2018, the button will not be there, so if you’re unsure of when you purchased Minecraft: Java Edition, that’s a good way to check. Pressing the button will generate a token and send you to a Microsoft redemption page.
