Minecraft Launcher stopped recognising gamertag

We have an issue with x-box gamertags and Microsoft accounts.

Microsoft family account, I am the main coordinator. We create a kid account for my son. In that account we create an x-box gamertag (lets call it CorrectTag). We buy Minecraft Java edition under that Microsoft account, as I understand.

Time goes by and at some point my son has some issue with his alias/login, and on his own and without adult support he ends up creating a different x-box alias for that account, by mistake of course.

Now, according to support forums etc. apparently this is NOT POSSIBLE, but he did, new gamertag (lets call it "FakeTag")

In the Minecraft launcher, he could only access the demo, because this FakeTag could not access the purchased minecraft. But he could just change gamertag in the settings to the old CorrectTag, and then play as he used to.

Now today 2021-12-12 he gets an error when trying to change to the original CorrectTag, so he lost access to the Minecraft we purchased under that gamertag.

I log in to the xbox profile from a different computer and under that microsoft account there is only ONE gamertag, FakeTag. Some time ago, both gamertags appeared there and he could see and access both of them.

I have been searching for information the whole day and my conclusion is xbox messed this up at some point by allowing us to create a different gamertag, and now for some reason the error has been detected but the wrong gamertag deleted and the link to the purchased minecraft gone. So:

- How is the purchase of Minecraft Java edition linked to the Microsoft account?

- Where is the old correct gamertag?

- Why could he create two gamertags under the same account?

Thank you for reaching out to us about your issue!

I know you stated about that you created a Microsoft account to purchase Minecraft Java Edition but there was a point in time where a user needed to have a Mojang account to purchase Minecraft Java edition.

Can you confirm whether or not that this was purchased with a Mojang account or a Microsoft account? It is possible that your son may have created an entirely new Microsoft account in attempt to perform a required Mojang to Microsoft account migration.

I have this exact same issue. Even though I migrated my account, it seems to think I don't own Minecraft. I can play Minecraft on the old launcher (logged into my Microsoft account) as it seems to recognise that I own the game there. Its only the new launcher that is having the issue and the Mojang website.

If you still have the old launcher installed maybe give it a go as it still works for me.

are you playing minecraft java edition or bedrock, as java i think does not use your gamertag. as you mentioned the minecraft launcher.

It didn't work. I followed your steps but the game still doesn't recognise my new alias.

I got an error message at the bottom of the launcher saying "Oh no! Something went wrong and we couldn't connect to the Minecraft services."

I clicked "Try Again" and it didn't work.

Do you mind sharing us a screenshot of the issue? Please conceal your personal information like gamertag and email address.

Should you have used Minecraft Launcher in installing Minecraft Bedrock then you must need to report this concern to the Minecraft Support team. However, if you are trying to use the Minecraft Bedrock app, please try to use the Minecraft Launcher instead. This is an official launcher from Minecraft which can be installed from Microsoft Store and Minecraft website.
