Now, since you purchased it on a Mojang account, maybe they can open an exception for you or give you a discount on the second purchase for your son. You can try to contact their official support:

hi Lucas, minecraft java edition was purchased through mojang and then the account was migrated to my Microsoft account. My son has his own Microsoft account and it's been added to the family account. Now I need to change the Minecraft login credential to using his microsoft email.

Is Minecraft purchased on your account? Does your son already have a Microsoft account that is added to a Family group that you own?

I saw the URL you posted and he said that his account is back again. It was just an issue with Xbox servers. Do you still need help with this? If so, please just answer my two questions and I'll guide you.

Hello, I have used the link and "recovered" the account and changed the password, however it wasn't the issue, when I login into my minecraft account it still says that I have to buy the java license. It also says: "Login as Tinky_Winky, to play minecraft java edition (switch account)" but whenever I do that It still logs me as an "xbox" account.
