Minecraft, Hello Pin, and an Unhappy Son

Using Windows 10 and trying to install Minecraft for my son. The computer REALLY wants to authenticate using Hello Pin, which I’ve never setup, so the setup fails. I cannot change the option to use authenticator, password, etc. Internet suggests disabling Hello PIN but the option is grayed out -Something went wrong. Try again later. I’ve tried later for about three years without success. Why is Hello Pin the spawn of all things unholy, and how do I get around this roadblock? I’ve repurchased Minecraft several times to get around this. Help me, Microsoft gurus, you’re my only hope…
