Minecraft gamer tag not changing

When I signed in, the Minecraft app asked me to change my name and I obviously did but it never saved! Xbox is claiming it did so now it's stuck on the autogenerated username and they demand I pay ten dollars to get back what was supposed to be free to me.
How do I fix this? I've tried reopening the apps as a refresher but it doesn't work and I'm not going to be made to pay to fix it.

Could you please explain exactly what you mean by saying Windows Player Tag, do you mean you Xbox gamer tag?

For the Xbox gamer tag, you get a system generated on at first then you have the option to change it to whatever name you wants for free. The free gamer tag change can only be done once on your account, if you try to change it again you will have to pay.

There are some specific games that set you up with usernames that are different than the gamer tag you have and Minecraft is one of them. You can to contact Minecraft support so that they can help you change the username.

Thanks for coming to the forums. If you changed your gamer tag, log into Xbox.com and see if you notice the change there. If it hasn't you can request a call from support for assistance. Please make sure you allow 24 hours for the change. Sign out of the
device completely, then sign in.

you can change the gamertag only once after that you will be charged for changing your username in xbox
