Minecraft for Chromebooks--Multiplayer. Needed. Now.

If MS owns Minecraft, when will there be a multiplayer version of Minecraft that can run on Chrome devices?

Look, I know that Microsoft and Android/Linux/Java/Chrome don't like each other, but since Microsoft has purchased Minecraft from Mojang, it is incumbent upon MS to make this work in a multiplayer version on a variety of platforms, as multiplayer is available
over the Windows 10 edition. This is more important now in this Covid-19 time of homeschooling, social distancing and kids being unable to get together on a single wifi network to play together and socialize safely. The vast majority of affordable devices--and
accordingly, those used by school systems--are Chromebooks (also currently borrowed from those schools to facilitate homeschooling). Can competitors work together to help for the common good?

The Chrome/Android Playstore Mobile "Minecraft PE" version can allow people on mobile devices to play together with a Windows 10 device and that version of Minecraft-- but the PE version doesn't work on Chromebooks (which are considered PCs and not mobile)--we
tried that-- and even though we can enable Linux on our new 2019 Chromebook, the version of Minecraft available via Java/Linux is not multiplayer.

We have 2 boys, and just bought a 2019 Chromebook (Octopus platform?) this week for homeschooling for kid #2; already have one Windows 10 laptop. Disaster. Kid #2 has been crying since school time ended (and hating the new device, which may be worse) as
we have tried a variety of ways to get this to work-- but even if we can use the now-downloaded version of Linux to play the Java/Linux version of Minecraft, it does not allow him to join his brother and friends in multiplayer (only available through the Windows
10 version or a private host site). Please resolve this.

There are guides now for installing Minecraft on modern Chromebooks using Linux that don't require developer mode. Here is one that I used: https://beebom.com/how-install-play-minecraft-chromebook/.
Sadly, the account/friends list is tied to a Microsoft account and I can't figure out how to log in using it.

You have to turn on developer mode to download it that how i did it but I can't sign in.

Sure. So Microsoft did buy Minecraft and Mojang but with all Xbox Game Studios purchases, the development of the games is fully up to the developer, Microsoft funds and publishes the games but has limited involvement with the development.

If you have Linux you should be able to play with Java players on Windows 10 . Windows 10 is the top download then Linux would be one of the bottom three depending on what OS you are running https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative/

Linux users cannot play with Windows 10 Store version. When you open Windows 10 Minecraft it should say Minecraft Java Edition see picture below:

If it does then you will be able to play if Linux users.

Minecraft Bedrock (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Android, IOS, Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Nintendo Switch, Gear VR, Fire OS and Fire TV) all support cross-play with each other.

Minecraft Java Edition players can only play with other Java players.

Minecraft Education Edition is only available on Windows 10, MAC OS and IOS. They all support cross-play with each other.

Mojang chooses what devices their games support, the best place to go would be https://feedback.minecraft.net/ and post your feedback there.

Thanks so much for responding. I thought Microsoft had purchased Minecraft? Or is that only the Bedrock versions you mention?

This is the reason I directed my comment to Microsoft. I can still easily access my original Mojang account from 2013, and was able to redeem it on XBoxLive when the multiplayer Windows 10 version transferred there. They offer 3 platforms for downloading,
which is where I found the Linux option...but it does not support multi players. Can you explain further? I thought MS was behind the multiplayer options.
