minecraft book and quill

I'm trying to use the book and quill on a lectern but the book isn't working. It doesn't show the done button at the bottom next to sign and it doesn't let you add a page using the RS button like before and it doesn't let me select a page so basically useless
because I can't use it to control using the lectern. Please help!! Apparently I'm running the latest available version on xbox which is 1.12. Somebody please help!! I need the book to power the lectern to power my elevator!

It seems like its a bug. The Wiki page about the lectern says you can use an unfinished one on it when trying to place it on a lectern/when trying to interact with the book on it.

I went into a creative mode game and tested it and it worked just fine... Try putting a finished book on there and see how well it lets you interact with it. If your game is bugged you may have to just take the book off of it, write in it, then put it back
on for right now. You could try to uninstall and reinstall the game, that's normally the all-in-one tool for getting rid of bugs. Also, try and see if it will let you interact with it correctly on a different save, your save file could be corrupted in some
areas if its a bug.

Not really no, for instance you can play warframe with a mouse and keyboard or you can play with a controller, it's just a matter of preference. Also, a lot of people would like to type messages with a keyboard or in a specific instance (like Minecraft's
"Book an Quill") type chapters or stories WITHOUT using a controller.

As a Bedrock player who uses the on-screen keyboard with controller, this update even hurts me. All of the aforementioned problems included, and I can't even see whether what I'm writing fits on the page in my book and quill. I use this book and quill in survival to record coordinates and this makes reformatting and retyping so much harder for no reason. No one asked for a new type of keyboard, there should at least be a toggle to bring the useful one back.

the 1.12 version might still be the latest one, any newer then that is a Beta.

The current beta version is 1.13.4.0 and from what I see in the store the Minecraft version is 1.12.

The 1.14 you mention seem to be the Java edition, which is different from the versions on the console.

It did not seem to have a effect it still puts me in a black screen with a cursor in the middle of the black screen. also when I do not have a mouse hooked up and when I try typing anything like a sign or a book and quill my screen also turns black until I back out of typing
