It shouldn't matter if your friend had the game in digital format, it's irrelevant because, as you could see in the frequently asked questions section of the website you shared earlier, it specifies that the offer is not valid for Minecraft Bedrock console versions like PS4. Personally, I had purchased Minecraft Bedrock for an Xbox console, and I never received Minecraft Java on PC, although I didn't expect it to happen since the offer didn't apply to me either.

Did you redeem the Minecraft Earth skin on the Ps4 Edition or o the Bedrock version?
