Microsoft, Xbox, Minecraft protection online - "Let this app access your info?" - It's...

Can anyone explain why I need an xbox account when I don't own an xbox? I can't find this written anywhere.

Minecraft wont let you leave feedback without giving an unverified app access to your information when you're already signed into Microsoft anyway. They've already got access to my details so what's a third party like Xbox got to do with it?

I've bought 2 copies of Minecraft from Mojang a long time ago. Now Microsoft own Mojang and I've migrated over to using my Microsoft login to play (no choice). To begin with Microsoft didn't even recognise me as a legitimate owner of the game because it didn't come from their store. Now, I learn that Mojang/Microsoft will be able to ban me from playing single player if they so desire.

I'm not sure what their 'game' is. I'm in my 60s and I legitimately own my copies of the game, I don't play multiplayer over the internet - I open my LAN to my grandkids when they're here, I don't own an Xbox (and never will) so why am I potentially going to be censored by a corporation that appears to give away access to private information?

I've got a lot of questions and very little answers. There's a great deal of alarmist videos, comments etc out there and Minecraft's own FAQ's are vague. In turn I consider this coming from Microsoft (maybe wrongly). We all know that Microsoft couch a lot of 'spying' as required to help them improve their 'service'. I haven't noticed any 'service' or product from Microsoft improving, unless they mean less control for the user, damage by forced updates that take hours to repair, just change for change sake and forced internet access. All the big social media platforms and Microsoft are starting to look like nothing more than private data collectors.

What is going on here? Am I missing a bigger picture? Who are these people deciding to ban others from using software they paid for?

Please don't respond with 'protection for children online' because I agree with this premise - but it doesn't explain why xbox is involved and I'm not sure I trust any large corporation focused on moneymaking to make decisions about what is safe for my grandkids or me.

    :)

Microsoft, Xbox, Minecraft protection online - "Let this app access your info?" - It's unverified so why would I?

    Hello Ricardo

Thanks for replying. So Minecraft is now a "cross platform" game that is run by Xbox but owned by Microsoft - even though I purchased the game many years before Microsoft got involved...I think that's right?

Do you know the name of the app that wants access to my private details so it can give it to Xbox (that already has it) so that I can give feedback on Minecraft but is unverified by Microsoft?
Will this unverified app delete itself after I've left feedback or just keep running in the background?
What other information will this unverified app use/take and for purpose?
Will I have to log in to Xbox as well as Microsoft to now play the game?

If not then what is the reason for all this in the first place if Microsoft and Xbox services aren't already talking to each other?

How is my single player game now connected through Xbox services as it doesn't show up anywhere in the Minecraft launcher - is it hiding in the background somehow and sharing what I do?

All I wanted to do is leave some feedback and play a game I've owned and loved for years. I don't want any app sharing my details if I don't know what it's doing with it and why.

    Thanks again.

You don't need an Xbox, there's an Xbox app for PC that is used to access the Xbox services on games

Don't know what you mean when you mention unverified app, as all Xbox apps are from Microsoft

You can't play Minecraft without a Microsoft account currently

Hi DittyMargoo! My name is Ricardo an independent advisor ready to help you with this situation!

You need to remember that this game is a crossplatform game, so it can be played trough many devices, but is a Microsoft/Xbox game currently, so to be able to play it you will need a Microsoft account, but Microsoft games are connected trough Xbox services, so that's the reason why, now you have to migrate the Mojang account you currently have to a Microsoft account and have access trough Xbox Services to the game

If after a Migration process you lost access to your game, could be because of many different reasons, you can check the most common here

    Hello Ricardo

I know you are trying to help me understand but I'm getting more confused now. So I now need to log into Xbox too and/or buy an Xbox now as well. Then they want access to everything, including all my contacts and email addresses, just so I can let them know that I don't like their idea of censorship? Well I suppose it's one way of selling more Xbox's and avoiding any feedback at all.

How do people play Minecraft without a Microsoft account (or old Mojang for now)? I thought there was no other option.

How do you leave feedback without letting Xbox have access to everything in there unverified Microsoft app?

I realise this is a community forum and I appreciate you trying to help me. I know that Microsoft do not care to hear questions from their customers and this forum is for users to try and assist each other only.

    Thank you for trying.

When you receive the request to give access it also specifies what kind of access will it have, you will need to log in Xbox, yes, to be able to play on Xbox, as is a different service outside Windows services, not everyone will play games on the Microsoft account

You can leave any feedback about the game on the game support site, also remember that this is a community forum, you will mostly get answers from community members
