I would love to be able to trade in digital games. Like Destiny for example, it had its run with +250 hours and I play the MP once in a blue moon for the shigs but I can go without it.

  2. There really is nothing too figure out.

The game and media companys have figured out and weasled a way for them too give people content without actually having too give anyone anything.

Its sad too say and im saying this with a full digital library... but digital is not the future if you actually want too posses your games.

The reality of this will hit hard when the xbox360 gets its service discontinued and millions of consumers lose access too a service and its features that they have paid alot of money for. And given alot of time too.

This will be a ttransition none of us have felt yet as the decomission of support for Original Xbox occurred when only physical games existed...

Therefore anyone coulda have kept there xbox and games too this day and still play offline. You should be able too do the same for the 360 in the coming years except the 360 has a pkethora of digital cntent that will be lossed too time

Microsoft can use the countries main game retailers to get an estimate of trade value. Wouldn't mind but the money would be going back to Microsoft. Well that's if they do as I suggested, credit our accounts for use on the marketplace. Ps, I lost lots of
arcade games when I changed my 360 for xb1

Dang Listed... you been hittin' the sauce today? That spelling/grammar is killing the points you're trying to make. =/

@Jerryjuice -- You haven't lost any arcade games. If you picked up a 360, signed in, you'd still be able to download and play them. You chose to get rid of your 360.

While I can foresee a scenario where it may be possible to loan/swap digital games with your friends, I don't think that Microsoft will ever allow you to "trade-in" with them.

With a disc copy, the game retailer offers a trade-in amount that allows them a profit margin when they sell it on as used. There is no such thing as a used digital copy.

  9. Thanks for the links folks. I confess to not knowing much about the DRM of the One as it was originally planned. The launch of the One was about the time I was switching back to PC gaming more.

  11. Haha, Deano. Nice find, shame it was way after they changed their policies

Panello, released that statement after they had to back down and change their policies. As if Digital Trade-ins had been part of the original plan. If it had been, it would have been in their original policies, and not stipulating it was disc-based games
only, but hey, what do i know, i was only here during the whole fiasco.

Microsoft really only wanted a monopoly on what could be resold and when, where and how. And as this forum has had this conversation before numerous times. actually took your consumer rights away from you, under US, EU, and UK Law.

During the original policy statements, they never said about trading in digital games for any form of re-sell value. They only thing they did say, and this was to their credit, but not the way they explained it, was that you could share digital games with
up to 10 people (like publishers were ever going to let that happen - again another quarrel that was long since buried), but they failed to explain exactly how it would work, with one person saying one thing and another saying something else.

While i agree, that any form of trade-in / re-sell / gift of digital games would be nice, the digital market is not like the physical market, at all, as there is no degradation of the game you are selling, you are essentially selling the game, exactly as
you purchased it. Brand new. Publishers would lose more with digital re-sell, as so long as one person is selling a digital game cheaper than the marketplace value of it. No-one would buy it dearer for exactly the same item. As you are still guaranteed to
get what is a perfect copy of a game already purchased once. An open digital re-sell market would be a death knell for publishers and developers alike. unless some sort of fee to the publishers was incorporated into the selling price. Meaning the seller gets
    even less back.

Physical can sometimes have issues if the person selling it, has been heavy handed or just useless at keeping their stuff clean. That is the risk you take with 2nd hand physical media.

Also, That article was written in September of 2013, and apparently 19 months later, there has been no new news of digital sharing, or re-selling your digital games..... As far as i am concerned, if they cannot arrange some sort of system in 19 months, when
they supposedly had a system for it in place already, they never had a decent plan in place the first time round, and it would never have worked the way they wanted.

17 months and the party chat system is finally working well, i'd say digital resale/trading is most likely still on the table, but there are other fires to still put out first.

i personally really wanted to see the original vision come to light with the 24 hour check-ins, could have been awesome, could have been a disaster, but i would have at least liked to have gotten the final product in my hands.

    Agreed Zero.

But a 24 hour check-in system with the original trade-in for disc based games. would have been a killer for the Xbox One brand, in my opinion.

Just the removal, and the pre-orders began to gain growth considerably, take away the Kinect, and sales double. Do a price cut and Microsoft finally get a month where sales beat their competition. (US and UK only).

It took a lot of changes from their original plan, which was in most people's views of the console industry was so far out there, that not enough people would have got on board, and we could have seen the death of the Xbox Brand. Which i am glad has not
happened, because without choice and competition, where would we be, playing the same games trolled out, day in and day out.

^While I understand the point of this, I disagree. The digital market is like the physical market in at least one way and IMO it's the most important way. Resale value has to be
determined and all factors need to be taken into consideration. Unless I missed it, this doesn't take 're-play' value into consideration.

All games age. Makes no difference if they're stored on a disc or a server. When they're new, a lot more people play them. They're a lot more in demand and they have a lot more
value. Once they've been out for awhile, they start to lose that value. People move on to other games, newer versions of the same game, etc. Digital is not exempt from this in any way.

Of course, digital has its advantages, mostly convenience. But as a consumer I have to decide just how much I'm willing to pay for the pros vs how much play I can see myself getting
    from the game.

As far as publishers losing more as long as one person is selling lower than marketplace value... this is just as true with physical. A person can only sell one copy of a digital
game, just as with a physical game. As far as the condition of said copy, why would I care [to a point] what condition the disc is in as long as the game plays? Considering that even on the 360 I could install the game to the HDD, the only thing I needed the
disc for was to verify ownership. Not much concern about wear on the disc when it only spins long enough to check for legitimacy.

Games were available on disc, cartridges, etc long before they were available as digital downloads. Any company... dev, publisher had to take 2nd hand sales into consideration
when coming up with a pricing plan. I feel pretty confident in saying I'd bet that, of all the game devs, publishers, etc that have gone out of business, probably very few, if any have done so because of 2nd hand sales.

  15. Blue - When i look on Amazon for a game. I will also look at the 2nd hand market, be it Amazon, Ebay or Game

I don't know how it quite works in the country you live in. But the vast majority of games that are on Amazon.co.uk are about £2-3 more expensive for a brand new one compared to a used one.

The £2-3 for me, is worth the knowledge that i am getting a brand new one, with all the guarantees that come with it, and the publisher still gets their cut.

Where-as if i was digital only, and i looked on the marketplace. which is where the sales will be held, as Xbox.com Marketplace is closed system. If you have the chance of getting say Battlefield Hardline for $60 from a trade-in person or $69.99 from the
Xbox.com. I know the one that that i would pick. Because i know there is no chance of any errors or issues. and i save $10 in the bargain. (using $, as that is the markeplace Xbox.com directed me to.

And as to the all games argument. yes they do, but rarely do the digital versions fall in-line with their physical counterparts. Even new.

    Examples

COD Ghosts - $59.99 on marketplace - $19.78 new on Amazon ($14.50 used)

    Titanfall - $29.99 on marketplace - $20 new on Amazon ($12.50 Used)

    Ryse - $39.99 on marketplace - $34.99 new on Amazon ($21.49 used)

    Forza 5 - $39.99 on marketplace - $33.27 new on Amazon (£16.90 used)

The Crew - $59.99 on marketplace - $29.99 new on Amazon

AC Black Flag - $29.99 on marketplace - $19.25 new on Amazon ($8.25 used)

And you can see the issue. For Years the marketplace has not followed the ebb and flow of the games market. Which is why When games are released, according to EA's profit and financial statements, Physical still makes up the vast majority of day one games
buying. Although their profit from digital is rising, it is from DLC, and Mobile (FTP) games that they make that money, more often than not.

When someone is selling their game, be it physical or digital. The only factor most people will take in to consideration will be, how quick they can sell the game so they can get a new one. So being cheaper than the competition, be it another seller or the
    marketplace will the main goal.

In the end, 1 person will go 1p or 1cent lower than the lowest person on there, so they can sell their game, and the next will do the same, until you have a spiral effect, and the game is practically worth nothing.

This could be good in one way, as it will drop digital prices quicker, but bad for publishers, as they will not see any more revenue once the first digital 2nd hand sale go onine
