How to password protect your Xbox LIVE profile

    Xbox LIVE password overview

It is possible to download your Xbox LIVE profile to several different consoles. You may need to do this if you have more than one Xbox 360 console, or you want to play games at a friend's house. In such a situation, you may want to password protect your Xbox LIVE account so that no one else can sign in using your profile.

Set the console to remember your password

Once you have downloaded your Xbox LIVE profile to a console, you will be asked if you want the console to remember your password. The Remember Password option is usually off by default. This means that you will be asked for your Microsoft account password every time you sign into Xbox LIVE.

If you don't want to be asked for your Microsoft account password every time you sign into Xbox LIVE, select the Remember Password option.

Change the password protection on your profile

You are required to set the Remember Password option after you download your Xbox LIVE profile. However, you can change the password protection on your Xbox LIVE profile any time.

If you don't need a password to sign in:

Sign into your Xbox LIVE profile. After you have entered your Microsoft account password, select the Remember Password option.

If you choose the Remember Password option, you will not be asked for your Microsoft account password the next time you sign into your Xbox LIVE profile.

If you need a password to sign in:

You can restrict access to your Xbox LIVE profile on any console using your Microsoft account password.

    Steps to follow

    1) Sign in using your Xbox LIVE gamertag.

    2) Under Settings, select Account and then Account Security

    3) Choose the option for Password at Sign In.

    4) Select Require Password Here

You will be asked for your Microsoft account password the next time you sign into your Xbox LIVE profile.

How to password protect your Xbox LIVE profile remotely

If you downloaded your Xbox LIVE profile to another console and it is not password protected, or someone has compromised your password, you can change the password from a remote location so that no one else can access your profile.

    Change your Microsoft account

    1) Sign into accounts.live.com using your Microsoft account.

    2) Go to Account Information and, next to Password, click Change.

You can also use your console to change your Microsoft account password.

Note: If the Xbox LIVE profile you downloaded does not require a password to sign in (You selected the Remember Password option), you will not be able to restrict someone from signing into your Xbox profile even if you change your Microsoft account password.

You can remove your Microsoft account password so that other people cannot access your Xbox profile on other consoles. This will ensure that a password is required before signing into your Xbox profile.

Remotely set a profile password from a computer:

    1) Sign into your Xbox LIVE account.

    2) Under Settings, select Account, and then Account Security

    3) Choose the option for Password at Sign In.

    4) Select On All Other Consoles.

Once you have done this, a password will be required to sign into your Xbox LIVE profile on all other consoles.

    How to Troubleshoot profile-password errors

It is possible to restrict access to your Xbox LIVE profile from any console by making it necessary to use your Microsoft account password to sign into your profile.

You may encounter the following errors when you try making your password necessary for sign-in:

    • "Sorry, there was a problem requiring your password for sign-in on other consoles. Your password is still remembered for other consoles. Try again later, or try requiring password on sign-in from www.xbox.com. Visit xbox.com/security if you think someone else is accessing your account."
    • "Sorry, there was a problem requiring your password for sign-in on this console. Your password is still remembered on this console. Try again later, or try requiring password on sign-in from www.xbox.com. Visit xbox.com/security if you think someone else is accessing your account."
Solution: Set a password requirement on Xbox.com

    1) Click My Account

    2) Go to Settings & Preferences

    3) Select Xbox 360 Profile Protection

    4) Sign in using your Microsoft account (email and password associated with your Xbox LIVE account). You will see the number of consoles that don't require a sign-in password to access your Xbox LIVE profile.

    5) Click Protect Profile. This will make it necessary to download your profile again using your Microsoft account before it can be used on any console. All previous copies of your profile will not work, and any changes or achievements that had not yet been saved to Xbox LIVE will be lost.

Important: If you feel that your password has been compromised, you can change your Microsoft account password by following these steps:

    1) Sign into accounts.live.com using your Microsoft account.

    2) Got to Account Information, and next to Password, click Change.

If you are unable to set a sign-in password on Xbox. com, you should check the Xbox LIVE service status.

If the Xbox LIVE service status is up and running, you should repeat the process later.

If the problem persists, contact Xbox Support.

Microsoft password doesn't work for Xbox live

I'm having the same problem. I can get online. My avatar shows I'm signed in but when I go to the store (Minecraft) it says I need to create an Xbox Live account. When I go to Xbox Live signup it says I'm already signed in. When I try to create an account
using my Windows and Xbox Live account info it says the credentials are already being used (by me).

Part of the problem I'm having is when I'm signed in with the Avatar, I don't know if that's the windows live account or the Xbox live account or something else. I doesn't say, which is not helpful. I can log into both windows and xbox live on my computer.

How do I associate my gamertag with my Xbox avatar? Or, if that's not the issue, how do I resolve this?

Using your App Password is dependant on where you try to sign in. If you have your account protected by two step verification, you need to use your "real" password on any app or website that is able to work with the secret code that you get from your phone
as part of the two step verification process.

The Xbox 360 however doesn't (yet) work with these security codes, and you have to use an app password on the 360.

What confuses me is, that the Xbox asks for your Microsoft Account password again. So could you please explain in more detail what exactly you are doing on the Xbox 360? Be as precise as possible. For example, instead of saying "I am redeeming a code on
the console and it asks me for a password" tell us something like this:

"I start the console, press the guide button, go left and choose the option to redeem a prepaid code, and after I press A, the console asks for a password"

That would make it a lot more easier for us to help you.

Signed in locally on the console, or really connected to Xbox Live? You can check the difference if you sign in with your Gamertag, go to the far right to the settings hub. There try to go to the account tile in the lower left.

If you are seeing a Microsoft Account email when you go to "Your Information" and "Security Info", then you have a proper online Live account.

Otherwise you only have a locally stored Gamertag without Xbox Live online connection.

Unfortunately, you don't exactly describe what steps you do. Check this:

If you are signed in on your console Gamertag and you press the Guide button, do you get a menu that lists Friends and Messages and stuff? Or do you get an option to "Join Xbox Live"?

If you get the "Join Xbox Live" option, then your Gamertag is an offline Gamertag only locally stored on your console.

You probably sign into this "BurliestRelic82" Gamertag, that you use in this forum. Since there is no Gamerscore on that account, I assume you haven't played with this account yet.

So I guess you really have two separate accounts. One online account with no game history, that is tied to your Microsoft Account email, and your Xbox console Gamertag, that I *guess* is an offline account.

How do I associate my gamertag with my Xbox avatar? Or, if that's not the issue, how do I resolve this?

    [/quote]

The answer to this really depends on how your accounts are really set up. Let's assume the scenario is as described above: You have a Gamertag on your console that is NOT connected online to Xbox Live. And you have an online account on your PC, that you
    haven't played on the console.

You can't connect the console Xbox account to your Microsoft Account, since there is already the BurliestRelic82 account occupying your Microsoft Account email.

The solution for this depends on what you wish to keep:

If you are willing to NOT keep your Microsoft Account email you use on the PC currently, you can simply make a new Microsoft Account at
Outlook.com - Microsoft free personal email and then use that newly created account to Join Xbox Live on the Xbox console with your Gamertag.

If you WANT to keep your Microsoft Account email, you also have to make a new Microsoft Account Email at
Outlook.com - Microsoft free personal email and then download the BurliestRelic82 account to your console. DO NOT GO TO XBOX.COM WITH THAT NEW ACCOUNT!!!

Do this by pressing the Guide button, and X to sign out of any Gamertag if necessary. Now you should have a "Download Profile" option in the guide menu.

Choose that option, and enter the Microsoft Account email and password you used on this website to sign into Xbox.com

This will download the empty BurliestRelic82 Gamertag to your console.

Now go to the far right settings hub, there to the Account tile in the lower left, then to the "Your Information" and "Security Info" settings, to move the Gamertag to another Microsoft Account.

Provide the new Microsoft Email that you just created at Outlook.com to move the BurliestRelic82 Gamertag away from your desired Microsoft Account email.

Now you have to wait 30 days, as every Microsoft Account has a 30 day "cooldown" period after a Gamertag has been moved away from that account (this was a security measure when a lot of Gamertag accounts were hijacked by Fifa Ultimate Team thieves).

After 30 days, sign into your console Gamertag, choose "Join Xbox Live" in the Guide menu, and provide your Microsoft Account email you used here.
