Microsoft has went overboard with the current enforcement policies

I've been on Xbox Live for over a decade now, since I was about 12/13 years old. Back then there were little to no community guidelines to follow. You could send just about anything in an Xbox Live message and get away with it. Considering I was going through my teenage angst phase, I recall sending some messages in admittedly bad taste. This type of 'hate mail'/'hate messaging' was incredibly popular at the time around 2010-2014 (give or take). I recall playing Dark Souls back in 2012 and participating in PvP circuits. While doing PvP I would receive hate mail every other invasion containing some of the most hateful, mean, and homophobic messages I had ever seen. At first it was jarring but I grew accustomed to it over time. Until I eventually I started sending the same style of toxic hatred to other players who made me angry. It was the same way on just about every other online game with a competitive edge to it. Gears of War, Destiny 1, Call of Duty, Halo, and many other popular games all suffered from toxic communities. Some were worse than others but either way, the hate mail flowed freely.

Around 2016/2017 the Xbox network got taken down/DDOSed on multiple occasions by the group lizard squad. They would attack the Xbox Live network and keep it down for days at a time. I specifically remember the Christmas of 2016 being bleak for me and my friends because they decided to launch a massive attack on the Xbox network. We couldn't even log onto our accounts, let alone join a party or get into a match for around a week. After the aforementioned attack though, Xbox finally bolstered there security systems. No group has successfully brought the Xbox Live network to it's knees since 2017 when lizard squad was active. This was the first massive shift I noticed with Xbox's enforcement guidelines too. Almost like they completely reworked their infrastructure.

The first time I received an Xbox Live suspension was toward the end of 2016. I got super into Rainbow Six Siege and took the game way too seriously than I should have. It was and still probably is the most competitive game I've invested alot of time into. Like I mentioned before, competitive games BREED hateful people and ATTRACT them too. The game brought me back to the toxic mindset I had when I was a young teenager even though I had just turned 19 at the time. Hateful messages were flying like mad and I didn't hold back either. I'm not proud of it by any means. Some of the stuff I said to other people was downright discriminatory at times. That was until someone decided to report my hate speech and give me a modest 2 day suspension. Did that stop me though? No, it wasn't nearly enough to get me to stop. At the time I was probably getting a ban every couple of months. Never more than 2 days per suspension though. That was until I became a repeat offender in their eyes. I received a very strongly worded email warning me of my behavior and telling me that they don't tolerate this level of harassment. This happened around 2018-2019, if memory serves me right. It was my wake-up call. Looking back on it, I definitely should have had the self-awareness to realize it was wrong of me to be that hateful in the first place. Sadly it took the potential ramification of losing my account to show me how awful I was being.

During all of these suspensions I was receiving, Xbox released their custom profile picture feature. I remember being super stoked about it at the time. This was when I began realizing and noticing the flaws in their reporting/suspension system. There were many occasions where I uploaded a very inappropriate profile picture and it would instantly get taken down (and rightfully so) but there were even more occasions where I uploaded something completely harmless just to receive a custom profile picture ban for a couple of days. One specific example I remember is a picture I found of Garfield transformed into a grotesque spider creature. It featured no gore, no nudity, nothing that was against their guidelines. Yet...I received a fairly prompt suspension and content takedown.

Now that I've rambled on about how it USED to be, it's time to talk about what it's BECOME. Around 2021 there was another shift in their community guidelines (or at least it felt like there was). Me and my friends have always had a group chat on Xbox One. It was commonplace to send messages whenever one of us hops on or wants to play a specific game. Then Xbox enabled picture sharing and (for a brief period) GIF sharing. It was amazing, my friends and I would send mounds of memes and ridiculous pictures we'd find online. Granted, not all of them were appropriate but none of them were so insanely offensive that they couldn't be in a group chat. This was around the time that Xbox made their worst decision to date, automated moderation. The automated moderation KILLS all the fun in our group chat. I've known every one of my friends in this chat for a bare minimum of 8 years. I consider them some of my closest friends. With that in mind, why does a private group chat need to be so heavily moderated that I get instantly suspended for posting something slightly inappropriate? Or putting a funny caption on a shared screen capture to make my friends laugh? And it's not like I'm posting slurs or even over using profanity in my posts. I get the need for excessive moderation when messaging people I don't know/don't have on my friends list but is it really necessary to moderate a private group chat that hard? As of late I've been getting massive bans for the smallest silliest stuff. Just the other day I posted a picture from Borat to get a reaction out of my friends. According to Xbox Enforcement though, that post was considered harassment. Harassment isn't tolerated by the enforcement team so even with the appeal system there was no way I could lift my 8. day. suspension. An 8 day suspension for posting a clip from a movie in my private group chat with some of my closest friends. This isn't new either. I've had this happen to me now at least 10 times within the last couple of years. All of which were in a private chat with my friends.

This has become such a massive problem for me and my friend group. To the point where we don't even feel safe sending anything even slightly over-the-line in fear of the ban hammer. I love gaming on Xbox and I've had some incredibly great times playing with friends and making new friends out of randoms I meet. That being said, the automated enforcement system needs fixing. Whenever my current suspension ends my friends and I have decided to leave our group chat until further notice due to this issue.

Has anyone else noticed similar issues currently? Did anyone else notice a sudden shift in their policies? If anyone has any input I'd greatly appreciate it, whether it be negative or positive. Feel free to correct anything I've said above. Everything in this post (for the most part) is based off of my personal observations. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

    TL;DR version:

Xbox Enforcement has been getting increasingly strict and it's been negatively affecting my personal group chat with friends. I don't post anything so obscenely offensive that it warrants a ban yet my friends and I get suspensions often. Can anyone else relate to this or has anyone else noticed a similar issue?

    :)

There has always been Community Standards and before that a Code of Conduct. Nothing has changed. In fact these forums used to be the only place you could contact the enforcement team about your ban. They were always an entertaining read.

If you and your friends are sending messages that break the rules (the same rules that have always been there) and are getting reported for them, then that probably says more about what you're sending. If you want to send messages that are riskier than an "E for Everyone" rating I'd recommend using another platform like Discord.

Can I get an answer as to why I was immediately banned from a singleplayer game (Road 96) when I wasn't even communicating with anyone?

I have always chosen my words so as not to offend anyone.

More to the point, I never got any notice of breaking the rules and it wasn't until the second year since I created my account that I was immediately banned without recourse. They didn't even send a message to my email about the lockdown being applied. I appealed: for what? It's not enough that no one answered me, they haven't yet given specific reasons why the account was permanently blocked, instead of being suspended for a certain period of time. How can I find out exactly why I was permanently banned when nothing is displayed on the xbox site?

That's fair, I didn't start looking at the code of conduct until I got my first couple of suspensions a good while back. I figured they'd been changed over the last 2 years or so considering the frequent interactions I've had with the enforcement team lately. It really seemed like something major changed so I assumed it was their policies.

I haven't been suspended in a very long time for anything outside of my group chat or my profile picture. That's the biggest reason this whole issue is concerning me. I don't think any of my friends would report my messages. If I take my friends reporting me off the table then that would mean these suspensions I've been getting are from an auto moderator that's moderating/flagging my group chat. Which is something that didn't start happening until a couple of years ago, if not a bit sooner. Before then it was never an issue. Now it seems like I'm walking on eggshells to avoid getting on the enforcement teams naughty list. It just seems very odd to me how sudden the moderation has ramped up and how much the severity of suspensions has changed.

Thanks for the prompt response! After I realized how much I wrote I figured no one would read it honestly. 🤣

I guess my phrasing could have been better. I know that there have always been community guidelines to follow, but it's become much more fleshed out than it was during the 360 era. They've (quite evidently) started cracking down on it and are going way overboard with it in my opinion. I've had multiple occasions where a profile picture doesn't come close to breaking guidelines yet there's a content takedown and suspension on my account a few days later.

In regards to the messages being sent, I do know when I'm sending a 'risky message'. I'd like to think that after being suspended as many times as I have, I have decent insight into what's risky to post. It's just shocking to me how much more strict they've become in-regards to moderation.

I don't even think the rules have been "fleshed out" over the years. They've been the same rules the whole time unless they've had to add something for newer features. The main difference is the rules actually list examples now when they didn't before. What's been a bigger change in my eyes is more people actually using the report feature now than they used to. It may not necessarily be for a good reason (ie. someone beat me in a game so I'm going to report them), but it's getting the enforcement team to check into more people.
