Microsoft Flight Simulator Update file location

I tried downloading the MFS updates (132 GB worth) to my C:/ drive and it kept stalling on a "decompression" step and wouldn't finish. When I started the update I had about 143 GB remaining on my C:/ drive and after some research I found that I may not be able to complete the updates due to not having full permission of the drive. So I deleted the game and re-installed to my E:/ drive, however it appears that the ~30ish GB of update that actually downloaded are hiding somewhere in my C:/ drive and I cannot locate them. It shows that I have 110 GB remaining as opposed to the 143 I started with before the install. I am trying to figure out where these updates may be stored so that I can recover some storage space. I think it's somewhere in my C:/Users/Username/... because the root folder "Users" shows 60.3 GB in the properties and I can only account for 14 GB going through all the internal folders. I appreciate any help and thank you!

I've been having problems with my Flight Simulator for months now. It was working before the updates, and now it's not working. I can't even uninstall it from y computer. I can't find the directory or the files related to the Flight Simulator.

I would say it's more about the free space issue than folder permissions. If your PC has only 143GB left on C:\ but the game needs to download 130GB there won't be enough room to update the game. That will make sense when I explain the reason why.

The download isn't immediately added to the current install as the files downloaded are compressed and have to be decompressed during the install. This can double the space required (temporarily) during the install process. This is why it keeps stalling during the 'decompression' step.

You need to put the game on a drive with a lot more free storage. At least double would be optimal.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I am currently trying to install it onto my new E:/ drive that is 2TB and is literally empty and MFS is the only thing on it. I am still having issues with "decompressing fs-base-0.....". It has been stuck here for a couple hours now and I have tried rebooting the game, steam, PC and still stuck on this step. So currently there is 66.79GB left of updates from the original 132 GB. I will attach some screen shots. Thanks again for any help!

Hello, Yes, it is possible to configure Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 updates to be downloaded to an external folder. To do this, follow these steps:

Open the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 application.

Select the Settings icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Select "General" in the left sidebar.

Scroll down to the "Updates" section.

Select the "Use a different location for updates" option.

Select the external folder where you want the updates to be downloaded.

Select "OK."

Once you have completed these steps, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 updates will be downloaded to the external folder you selected.
