Microsoft family child credit parental approval problem

    Hi,

My 11 year old son recently got his first Xbox. He also got some vouchers and credit put in his Microsoft account totalling approx £60. I selected on the parental controls that 'all' purchases needed approval. He also thought when he purchased anything I
would need to give permission first. The plan was to spend the credit slowly so he learnt to manage his spending. Before I knew it though he'd spent the lot on Fortnite v-bucks! The reason for this was it actually seems the parental approval does not apply
when there is credit in their account, so the term 'all' as mentioned earlier is not true. I'm not happy with this as it denies me as a parent any control over when and how that credit is spent or helping my son learn money management. There needs to be a
further option of approving all purchases including any credit. It's still real money after all.

Has anyone else suffered the same issue? Are Microsoft planning on doing anything about it?

    :)

Help with adding a payment method

Sounds like it's looking for parental approval to add a credit card. Check for any mention of parental controls when it's asking for email and password there, maybe try the login credentials of the primary account on your former Family Pack.

    Family Pack Issue

Hi there HEY JASE, you are correct in the fact that a child account needs parental approval before entering a family pack. As you are adding the family pack member and you are prompted to enter an email address and password, use the credentials for the parent
account instead of the child account (your son's account).

Hi, it's not actually an issue or a problem, as it states on the family website, that purchasing using a gift card or money from your Microsoft account does not require parent/adult approval. But I understand were you are coming from, and yes it would be
ideal for this to happen. Which is why you should post this on the xbox ideas website here. xboxideas.uservoice.com The more votes it gets, then the more chance it would be implemented sometime in the future.

  6. Hello, RM-Gamer!

Sorry to hear about that issue you had with the initial family settings for your child's account.

We do have another means through which you can child ask permission and have the console require inputting of a pin to allow him to make purchases.

What you do is create a passkey and set it to be required for purchases while signed into your child's account.

Try following the steps here on
How to create an Xbox One passkey
to create one and the steps here at
Require a passkey for purchases on your Xbox One console
to have it required whenever your child wants to buy anything.

Give that a shot and let us know if it helps with the situation

    Thanks !

¿Cómo contratar Game Pass PC para un menor?

    Hi Hugh_Carter,

Thank you for reaching out to us here on the forums regarding this situation.

Your family settings may require an adult's approval before a child account can make a purchase. If you leave the Ask a parent feature on, you can continue to make sure a child doesn't make a purchase using an adult's credit card, and you can monitor the type of content they want to buy.

If you do choose to turn Ask a parent off, the child account can make purchases without an adult’s approval. If you want to turn this feature off, follow these steps:

    • Sign in to your Family page with an adult Microsoft account.
    • Find the child's name and select Content restrictions.
    • Under the Ask a parent section, switch Needs adult approval to buy things to Off.
    • If you leave the adult approval option On, you can approve or deny the child's purchase requests through email or on account.microsoft.com/family.

    Best,

    XBF Drew

Credit card not showing as option for child's account in Microsoft Family Services.

So this did actually work. To be clear, you need to add a credit card to your child's account (a step that should not be necessary if you have a family payment method). If you then turn off Ask to Buy for your child's account, select the credit card when purchasing with the child account, and the transaction will go through (rather than going to approval, at which point you cannot use the credit card, only pre-loaded cash) . Just remember to turn Ask to Buy back on afterwards so your child doesn't spend all your money on Minecraft items.

Overall this system seems badly broken. In contrast the Google Play store method just works - add a payment method once for the family and require parent approval for purchases on child accounts. Fix it Microsoft.
