MICROSOFT? - DVD drive noises after march update - what's happening?

Numerous users around the world have reported an issue which has only started occurring after the March update - that is 10 to 15 seconds worth of repeated regular DVD read noises taking place about 30 seconds any time a game disk is inserted in the drive,
No error is displayed and it doesn't seem to affect console performance in any way. So far there does not seem to be any explanation from Microsoft. I personally contacted technical support and they told me as long as there is no grinding and the console works
ok there should be nothing to worry about. However we need to know what this is and whether it is likely to cause wear-and tear issues over time,

If you are experiencing a similar problem please post here.

And Microsoft - if there is an explanation can you please tell us what it is.

    :)

  3. Does the Xbox 360 E have a different DVD Disc drive to the Xbox 360 slim?

Because I have an Xbox 360 slim and an Xbox 360 E 250GB (Manufacture date 2013-07-23) and the Xbox 360 E makes a 'Grrrr' noise just prior to eject and also if a game is left in the drive idle it makes the same
noise after about a minute, the slim DVD drive
    does not make this noise.

Please see the You Tube link

The DVD drive also ejects smoother on E than the slim, (that’s another reason why i think it may be different. DVD drive)

I know of one other Xbox 360 E that makes exactly the same noise.

    Thanks

MICROSOFT? - DVD drive noises after march update - what's happening?

My console was working perfect;y fine until i got the March update (I am part of the beta preview group as well). Ever since then it made the 15 second clunking noise when reading game discs a minute after inserting the disc.

After only getting told by customer support that the update can't have caused it and it must be a hardware issue, I decided to get my console replaced by the retailer today. The brand new console makes the exact same noise straight away.

The fact I've had it now with 2 brand new consoles and the fact a lot of people have begun reporting this issue online, but only in the last few weeks since the March update and never before, all points to it being caused by the update.

    Video I recorded

Hey folks! I've commented on this elsewhere, during the 1403 preview, and on Huggs's latest thread, too. This seems to be a pretty common problem at this point. On my experience, same as others have reported, shortly after inserting a disc, I get the repeated
"guh-gunk" read noise that the drive does when it first initializes a disc, and it repeats for about 10-15 seconds. It is consistent with the video Huggs linked. This is NOT the usual "disc spinning up and initializing" noise, because that noise is very stuttered
and random - this anomalous noise is a rhythmic sound.

Like I said, it is at least a relief that this doesn't affect gameplay, but I'm sure I'm not alone in my concern that this could cause unnecessary long-term wear-and-tear that could at the very least shorten the lifespan of the drive. On top of that, I understand
the phone support personnel might not be familiar with every issue, but I would feel comfortable saying this is definitely not a hardware problem, as it occurred simultaneously on all of these users' xboxes shortly after receiving the Preview and/or official
update (for those not in the preview group), as well as happening to Huggs on two completely different machines - the first would have been when the Preview Build (and official 1403 build) rolled out, but if I'm reading it correctly, his new console would
have only had a chance to be on 1404, as he swapped it out after the latest preview had already begun. So, it seems that this HAS to be related to something that happened in the tweaking of the software during the updates....

I'd be very curious to hearing from someone who hasn't mentioned this in the past and maybe doesn't even KNOW that they are experiencing this (maybe they haven't noticed yet.) If someone who doesn't think they have this issue would do us this favor: put
a disc in the drive, then wait for about 2 minutes before doing anything else. Just listen. You should hear the disc spin up and initialize, and then a short while later, you will hear a rhythmic "guh-gunk" just like the drive is supposed to do, except that
it now does it over and over for about 15 seconds straight.

Here is a new video I recorded showing the time between inserting my copy of Titanfall and then hearing the 'guh-gunk' disc drive noise.

I don't know what MICROSOFT has put in this update. But whatever it is it is FAULTY. I have NEVER complained on this forum before. But today MS has literally crashed my console disc drive. I updated my console today and within an hour of playing it just
stopped being able to READ any disc. But I am not worried. I have the 2 year extended warranty. Altogether I paid about $775 for my X1 from the MS store. But my system is also making all these crazy noises. Whatever has happened MS better FIX it quick. I spend
thousands of dollars with this company and I EXPECT SO MUCH MORE...! This is completely UNACCEPTABLE MICROSOFT....!

MICROSOFT? - DVD drive noises after march update - what's happening?

Today March 19th, I also received the update as well. Soooooo....... yeah xbox one doesn't read any games. Oh wait, Titanfall started up. So of course thought it was fine, nope not the case. Won't read any discs says they're dirty or damaged. Neither true
of course. Yes update is for sure the cause of my Xbox one not playing all but one of my 10 xbox one games. Do the math Microsoft..... 10 games @ 59.99 = $600. I'm behind you guys and ladies at Microsoft all the way but I'm not in the mood for this $#@% today!
It's my day off from work, which pays for all this lovely high tech gaming that I so love, but I paid up....let's get this right! Please so I can go back to getting some more achievements.

UPDATE / FIX ----> Unplug the console. Wait 5 minutes then restart console..... I REPEAT UNPLUG ONLY.... DO NOT hold down the power button and do an entire reset. That is NOT needed.... Ok... > So me being a LOYAL MICROSOFT CUSTOMER and STOCK HOLDER....
I must give me utmost APOLOGIES to MS. The system must have just been power surged or something. But this worked for me. My disc were recognized and I was able to play any game of choice.... So I guess my 5 sec rant doesn't count as a full on complaint considering
I did NOT have to call customer support...!

If you are continuing to experience noise in your drive (or console does not read any discs) after the update, you should contact Microsoft support! And they will help you swap Xbox One console.

Also please mention to support that these problems started after March update. Then they will route original console to the hardware team to investigate that problem.

@ J Rich and Nikka - good to hear your issues are sorted but the issue you were having is different to the one being discussed in this thread. With this issue, the disc's are actually read and work fine, but the disc drive makes a unusual noise for 10 seconds
    after loading the disc.

@ Edragon - I've had my console replaced by my retailer and the disc drive began making the exact same noise right after the initial update. I'm not prepared to go through a direct replacement with MS after 2 nightmare failed advanced exchanges I went through
last month. I've had little to no success explaining the issue to customer support thus far, hopefully they reported the issue to Tech support like I asked.

More people need to contact support, explain the scenario and try to get them to report the issue to higher support. We need some info on what is causing this problem, it just can't be the case that a number of consoles have suddenly developed this 'fault'
    after all this time.

MICROSOFT? - DVD drive noises after march update - what's happening?

EDragon, thanks for the advice, but as stated at the top of this thread, this is not an issue with disk read errors or abnormally noisy drives - it's inexplicable regular repeated reads whenever a game disk is inserted. We do not get the same noise with
DVD films or blu-rays. This has to be operating system or driver firmware doing this (the physical DVD drive itself doesn't know the difference between a game disk and a film), and given that people have only started reporting it after the March update suggests
it is to do with some software change brought in with the update. We just want to know what it's purpose is whether it is likely to reduce the expected lifespan of the drive.

  14. Huggs, THANKS for posting the video. That was very helpful. The developers are looking into this and believe we have an explanation (working to confirm). To double check, the sound happens about a minute after the game has started up, and last for about
12 seconds? It sounds like the drive is doing a few "seek" operations on the disc?

mistur niceguy - it's good to know developers are looking into this. Your description is accurate (I'd say between 30 seconds and a minute), but also it should be noted it will happen regardless of whether or not the game is running (I've tested by quitting
the game from the guide button menu and the seeks will still occur within the same timeframe even though the game is no longer running). Just to confirm, these multiple seeks are guaranteed to occur as a 10 to 15 second sequence 30 seconds to a minute after
any game disk has been inserted.
