I'm just wondering what impact the Steam Boxes will have on the industry ? they definitely going to be more powerful then both PS4 and the One. I think a lot of people are going to sit on the fence about both consoles at the moment. No one really knows
the next big thing that's going to happen in gaming. What with Oculus Rift etc.

Im more interested to know what effect the steam box has on valve's bottom line. From everything Ive seen they will be taking a substantial loss on each one sold. And considering valve isnt a huge software maker, I dont understand how this makes sense business
wise for them. Would someone care to explain that to me?

Correct before the reveal. But regardless of what vision Microsoft had for their console that shouldn't insight fanboy riots. There are a few things I dont like about the PS3 and not once ever did I go to their forums and bash it. The PS4 has some unique
things, but it still has somethings that I dislike, and with the reports of how
Sony was going to include the camera and DRM I look at them as dishonest. But still I dont feel the need to go to their forums and bash them about it.

[/quote]That was an awesome move and likely won them the "console war" this gen. Sony showed they were willing to slash their competitors throat for our business and that's how it should be...them competing for us. And what about the arrogance the execs
at MS displayed? "We have a console for you" remember that? Or implying that the anti-consumer policies they tried to enforce got removed because we just didn't understand how awesome they were? They are lucky the hate has died down as much as it has and they
still sold a ton of consoles.

[/quote]It'll be interesting, maybe PC gamers buy the Steam machine? I've never heard anyone in real life even mention the Steam machine.

Your final fantasy shirt is not a piece of digital media.

When you purchase a game, be it a physical or digital copy, you buy the license to play it. You don't own the game.

Regarding even physical media, you can have online content that is included as part of that game locked away or revoked. You do not live in an age where digital content is truly yours unless you have developed and published it yourself..

Unless something recently changed the boxes will be made by 3rd parties at different price points. Nice thing if you don't like the prices they offer you can simply buy a laptop,install the OS yourself, HDMI to TV and good to go.

Well it looks like Valve won't take the loss but third parties will. Last thing i read was Alienware was releasing their Steam Box at same price as the Box One. But with the Oculus Rift being Steam Box compatible it does put Valve in a strong position.
Sony are rumored to be working on their own version, regards MS nothing. I think everyone is watching Valve with interest what they are going to do next. If done right Steam Boxes could be a serious challenge to both Sony and MS.

I don't think it's to bring PC gamers to their TV's we've been doing that for years and Big Picture gave us a console style dashboard if we are playing controller games so we already have the best of both worlds.

I think they are looking to take the console market and bring console gamers to the PC. They remove the need to be tech savy ( auto driver updates, etc) and they may succeed.

Your background is unnecessary. I'm a pretty big PC gamer myself apart from my MSI Twin Frozr III R7950 died on me so I have to wait for a new GPU before I can get back into gaming. I'm actually pretty huge into Skyrim modding as most people on the Skyrim forums
will know from my old screenshot thread that showed off a modified Skyrim.

Actually more games have DRM than you think, just not always in the same form as services such as UPlay. There's a multitude of MOBAS and MMO's available on Steam that require to be online always. It's not just Ubisoft games, though I am still waiting for them
to remove UPlay from their titles as it wasn't removed from the new Splinter Cell.

I do not believe they are finished with this yet. I will tell you why. Because of companies/governments moving to make digital content tradeable/resellable, in the EU so that the end user has more rights and control over content they purchase. Whether that
finally comes to fruition or not is a different story, but I would definitely not sit and think Steam are done yet.

 

But that's just it, Steam Boxes won't be considered a threat by either MS or Sony. They did the same last time MS was so bothered about Sony they ignored Nintendo and the rest is history. Now it's like Microsoft can't ever forget that mistake hence Kinect
2.

PC Gamers don't need a Steambox to play their game's on their TV's. They just need a HDMI cable.
