  1. Microsoft Accounts, Security Proofs, and YOU!

Formerly known as your Windows LIVE ID, your Microsoft Account allows you to sign into Windows devices, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, and more. We've set this up to help explain what your Microsoft Account is and streamline adding Security Proofs to it.

What is a Microsoft account and what does it do?

Your Microsoft Account holds your basic information (name, address, sign in & password) along with your security proofs. This allows you to log in, access, and verify your activities on all Microsoft products and platforms. Simply sign in to
account.microsoft.com to access all of this information!

    What are security proofs?

Security proofs are a system of two factor authentication features that keep your account safe and control your account or activities on Xbox.com, Xbox Live, Windows devices, and anywhere your Microsoft Account is used! Proofs will only ever be used to ensure
    the protection of your account!

    Are security proofs required?

Yes, they are required, but they should be wanted as well! Security proofs keep your account in your hands. It is required that you have at least two verified proofs:

    • SMS phone number (or a voice phone number)
    • Alternate email address
How do I set up security proofs?

Navigate to the Settings hub on your console, select
    Account
, and scroll over to the Your Information panel. Now select Account Security, select Security Proofs and follow the prompts from there. You may need to put in your email and password
    to continue with this step.

Ex. Set Up Email > enter the email to send the security code to and select Done > select Next or I Didn’t Get a Code > if you did receive a code, enter the code and select Done > Continue > Done!

You can also update your security info online at account.microsoft.com. For more information on security proofs, check out our support.xbox.com article “Add
and update the security info for your Microsoft Account
    ”.

Are security proofs the only way I have to protect my Microsoft Account?

Nope! There are lots of ways you can ensure your account's safety, proofs are just the most common security feature. Make sure to take time to learn more about your Microsoft Account Security options!

How do I change my Microsoft account email or password?

"I want to change my Microsoft account password"

You can change your Microsoft account password from your Xbox 360 console. You will be asked for the current password and you must be connected to Live to complete this change. Follow these steps to change your password:

      1. Navigate to the Settings hub (far right on the dashboard) and select Account.
      2. Navigate to the Your Information panel, select Account Security.
      3. Select Change Password.
      4. Enter your current and new password.
      5. Select Save Changes.
"I want to change the Microsoft Account email associated with my GT"

If for any reason you want to change the email you have associated with your account, all you need to do is follow these steps:

      1. Navigate to the Settings hub (far right on the dashboard) and select Account.
      2. Navigate to the Your Information panel and select Account Security.
      3. Select Change Microsoft Account.
      4. Select Yes once you have created a new Microsoft Account.
      5. Enter the password for your current Microsoft Account.
      6. Enter the Microsoft Account and password you would like to use.
      7. Complete the prompts to save your change.
    Additional Information:

      • You can make only one Microsoft Account email change every 30 days (per GT).
      • Before you can change the Microsoft account email associated with a child account, you must provide the email and password for the adult account with parental control.
      • Your Microsoft Account currency will not transfer to your new email, so be sure to spend that before you do this.
I have an issue with my Microsoft account, what can I do?

“I don’t know my Microsoft Account”

You can find the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox Live account on your console. Here’s how:

Sign in using your gamertag. On the top right, you will see your email scroll through along with your Microsoft Account currency. If you don't see it there, go to
Settings and select Account, scroll to
    Your Information
and select Account Security > Viola! Your email is listed there.

If you do not have access to the Xbox Live account on your console, you can try our
Forgot your Microsoft Account email or password troubleshooter. If that doesn't help you out, you’ll need to try to
Recover your Microsoft account”. Make sure to provide as much information as you can!

“I do not have access to the security proofs I set up”

Check out our support.xbox.com article on how to “Manage your Microsoft account”.

    “I forgot my password”

Follow reset password prompts from sign in. Use your proofs! If you do not have any proofs set up or have old proofs you’ll need to select “I can’t use any of these options” and complete the form to Microsoft Account support for follow-up.

“I get an error that there is a problem with my Microsoft account”

This can happen if there is suspicious activity on your Microsoft account. To resolve, simply visit account.microsoft.com and sign in. Verify your identity using the security proof code sent via email or text and you should no longer encounter any
issues! If, however, you do see suspicious activity please contact phone support as soon as possible and start an Unauthorized Access investigation.

I’m still having an issue with my Microsoft account, what are my options?

If you have reviewed all of the support options suggested above you can create a brand new post to inquire about your issue. When making that new account be sure to include the following information:

    • A detailed description of your issue
    • The error message or code are you encountering
    • Steps you have already tried
This information will allow us to hop right into the troubleshooting process and get your issue resolved as expeditiously as possible!

    :)
