I am trying to sign into my account so I can change my restrictions for my Xbox but when I signed in it took me to a whole different account and i'm sort of worried that I have lost my account.

Why not buy a subscription from 1 of the websites ?

I know you were wanting to use your microsoft balance but you can get a 12 month sub for like £25 or you could the other day.

Be cheaper too.
