Hopefully the remaining Microsoft points that people have will be converted to local currency, or else that would be a huge waste. I found an FAQ on this, hopefully the information is true.

  3. Microsoft Points Will Expire

According to an article on gametrailers, looks like our MS Points will be expire one year after they transition your microsoft points to local currency.. Check
    it out

"You will begin using local currency or an Xbox Gift Card (denominated in your local currency) to buy music, games, videos, and more from your favorite Xbox stores. When you use your existing Microsoft Points to initiate a purchase or redeem a Points
card with your Microsoft account later this year, we’ll deposit into your account an amount of money equal to or greater than the marketplace value of your Microsoft Points, and your Microsoft Points will be retired. The purchased funds you deposit into your
account after the transition will not expire. However, the funds we deposit into your account at the time of the transition will expire one year from the deposit date."

Gamerscore is not the same thing as Microsoft points. There is no way to convert gamerscore into currency.

Microsoft points used to be Microsoft's own form of currency that you would need to purchase content on Live.

  6. gamerscore is a simple competitive numbers, really many many players play with the goal to raise it as much as possible, there is no other meaning behind it.

As far as the rewards program, they dont give you credit for your gamerscore, but the number of gamerscore you have puts you in a different VIP level that will earn you credits for purchases you make each month you are on a gold subscription.
