Microphone symbol one Xbox screen always appears with a slash

    Hi,

    |I cannot get my mic working in games as the symbol has a constant slash through it on the Xbox display. I have tried all the forums and advise from the internet but to no avail. everything I have tried has failed. Can this be resolved or is it a fix
that Microsoft need to resolve and release a system update for. This is very frustrating and I cannot seem to get in touch with Microsoft support direct on this.

    Thanks

    :)

How do I turn on my microphone? Or unmute my mic on the XBOX? There is a microphone in the top right corner with a slash through it.

    Thank you!

Never mind.. I guess the Didact Symbol is used when the Ancient Evil screen appears... so it is Didact

    Hi Mggray100!

Thanks for reaching out to us! Sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue and I know it is super frustrating. I'm unsure what exact troubleshooting steps that you have attempted this far, but I can say that if you've already checked your audio settings
to ensure that you are not muted and have ensured that the mic itself is not muted, then you've already eliminated your console as the culprit.

There is a possibility that the issue stems either from the headset itself or from your controller. Normal troubleshooting steps should point you in the correct direction for resolution and I'd recommend using the support article

    Xbox One Chat Headset troubleshooting
to do so. I'd also like to add that you should test the headset out on different controllers and possibly a different console (like a friend, neighbor, family members, etc) to see if you get different results.

You should also attempt to see if your controller has up to date firmware. Sometimes this can have a tremendous effect on how the controller acts and responds and sometimes how other devices, like headsets with mics, perform.

    1. Press the Xbox button
      to open the guide.
    2. Under System, select Settings.
    3. Under Kinect & devices, select Devices & accessories.
    4. On the Xbox One Wireless Controller screen, select “…” to check the firmware version for your controller.
    5. If it says there’s no update available, your controller is current. If it says “Update,” follow the steps provided.
Now, if you do all this troubleshooting and your headset mic is still not being recognized, then it may well be the controller's headset jack port that isn't recognizing the headset correctly and you'd need to look into a repair for that controller. If you'd
like to contact Xbox Support directly for troubleshooting, the best thing you can do is request a callback from them.

When you go to Contact Usto request a callback, follow these steps:

    • Step 1 ----select Xbox One
    • Step 2 ----select no thanks, then select category system update
    • Step 3-----gives some troubleshooting or help tips
    • Step 4 ----select request a call from support

Once they call, explain the issue and they will be able to help you.

I hope that this helps out and please let us know the results.

    Hi Mggray,

What kind of headset are you using? Is it compatible with Xbox one?

it isn't the drivers or the controller... it is the Network Cache that needs to be cleared. I just worked through this with tech support two days ago... it was actually the third time we've had this problem... each time I try to remember the steps, but
it is to terribly illogical, that I can never remember... but the next time it happens I will search for the answer on this site and i'll see these same frustrated posts and i'll see my own fix, and it'll jog my memory: Clear the Network Cache!!

We've had this happen several times and finally found a support person to help... this doesn't make any sense, but you need to clear the Network Setting Cache... That's all. It's a Network problem.

One of the tech support people explained (sort of) that the controller is a 'networked device' so the xBox Network settings can occasionally be messed up by other programs (fortnite in particular)....

Clear the cache and presto, the slash over the mic goes away (after restart, as I recall).

We had been told a wide variety of 'solutions', but none of them worked:

    - 'your controller needs to be replaced' - we went and got a new one, same problem.

    - 'you're headset isn't supported' - we went and bought a new headset, not a fix.

    - 'you need to update your drivers' - wrong

    - 'you need to buy an adapter' - we did, but it din't fix problem...

So much wasted time. Not entirely sure why tech support doesn't post this information.
