Microphone icon (top right of screen) is constantly muted

I bought an xbox one s in May 2018 for my son, have only just allowed him to use a headset to talk to friends on Fortnite except it worked for a limited time and now shows as muted. I have spent a lot of time going through settings and have followed the
instructions on the various support pages here, watched videos on youtube and looked at posts online. The issue i have does seem to be a bug rather than a settings issue, to date i have not seen or found anyone who has fixed the problem. Microsoft, can you
please advise how i can resolve this?

Unfortunately it appears that Microsoft has introduced an incompatibility between controllers and consoles that is impacting the 3.5mm headset jack. It is unknown how long it will take before they release an update to fix that issue.

The Microsoft stereo headset adapter is one possible workaround. Another workaround to the issue is the Microsoft Chatpad. While this may be a bit more expensive than the headset adapter, it has some added benefits:

keyboard for easier typing in messages etc, can also be used as mappable controls for games like War Thunder
Built-in volume, game/party chat mixer adjustment

I know it's annoying to have to spend more money to fix an issue that is beyond your control however this will likely be the fastest way that you can resolve the issue at this time.

Hello MKT,

Sorry for the issue with the muted icon. This is a known issue, especially with third party accessories. We recommend getting an adapter, this has been known to help with the issue.

Hi have you checked to make sure you don't have the audio set to off? I do this all the time and forget. I would also make sure you don't have any bans or suspensions. Alternatively you could try power cycling the console or even factory resetting
it keeping games and apps.

Hi, tried pretty much everything, been through the settings countless times and tried the Skype app but also doesnt work for skype. Ideally want to leave the factory reset as a last resort, hoping somone on here may have fix (microsoft).

Without wanting to get off subjet but has anyone completed the factory reset keeping games and apps? Does it actually work as suggested as i have read comments to say they encountered a lot of problems.

Have you tried performing the hard reset EXACTLY like this. I know it has worked in some instances. Hold the power button on the console for 8 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for
5 minutes. Plug the power cord back in and restart the console.

Also, have you tried a different controller?
