Microphone doesn’t work on Xbox One S

    Hi all.

    Long post here, so apologies.

I bought an Xbox One S just before Christmas 2018. I had a 360 for some time but didn’t pursue the One when my friends did. I missed the old days of gaming, so bought one eventually. The main reason for the purchase was to be able to chat to my friends during
gaming. However, the One S doesn’t come with a headset included, so my friend gave me a couple of stereo headsets and an adaptor. He did say they may be busted, so when they didn’t work I wasn’t surprised. So I purchased an official Microsoft One headset,
only to find this also didn’t work.

I have done a large amount of troubleshooting with no success. I’ve been through every privacy setting more than once, meticulously, confirming that my privacy settings are correct. I’ve tried updating my console, updating my controller, connecting my controller
with a USB cable, power cycling the console, unplugging my console for several minutes, resetting my console entirely and I’ve tested my network and NAT. Nothing has worked. The only thing that comes close to working is using the adaptor my friend gave me
and connecting an iPhone 3.5mm headset. This results in a squeaking, buzzing sound where the sound from the microphone should be heard.

The friend that gave me the headsets showed me a setting I had to check. Pressing the Xbox button on the controller and scrolling to the settings tab should show audio settings. It doesn’t appear for me on my Xbox whether a headset is connected or not.

To rule out problems with my profile I logged into my friend’s Xbox One (original) using my own controller and official headset. The microphone worked and I was able to chat in game and in a party. The aforementioned audio settings tab also appeared here.
This strongly suggests my console is the culprit. It’s still under warranty, so should I send it off for repair?

    Many thanks for reading.

    :)

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I have tried a headset adapter. It’s used though. I got it from the same friend that gave me two of the headsets and the same friend whose house I set up my Xbox in. I’ve tried with and without the adapter with no success.

I managed to acquire another controller from a different Xbox One S. This one had the official rechargeable battery pack. I connected it using a USB cable. The same issues occur. I connected it wirelessly. The same issues occur.

I also connected my Xbox to different networks, wired and wireless. No change. I double checked port forwarding, confirming the correct ports have been set up via UPnP. I even went so far as to make the Xbox a DMZ to ensure nothing on the network side was
getting in the way. No changes whatsoever. (Yes, I remembered to disable DMZ after the test)

The possibility exists that the headsets are at fault, but one is brand new and official, one is generic and two are high end, and the three non-official ones connect using either USB or 3.5mm or both. All four allow me to hear through the ear pieces, but
none allow me to communicate over the microphone (except the generic one that makes a terrible screeching sound). The fact that all these headsets allow sounds to be heard but not made strongly suggests that something other than the headsets are the issue
here. Also, bear in mind that my official headset worked at my friend’s house but sounded crackly, then worked briefly at my home with better clarity but suddenly stopped working shortly afterwards.

I’m perplexed as to why I was able to use the microphones at a different location, then again in my home but only briefly. If it’s an issue with my setup at home I would expect it to not work at all, not for a few moments then suddenly fail.

I’m regretting purchasing the One S now. But at least it has a 4K BluRay player.

Hi, maybe it's a problem with that headsets, try with other and you need to be sure the 3.5 mm to connect, if that's an other error contact the support maybe it's a problem with the console, use the warranty or you can go here: support.xbox.com

On the bottom of the page there is a section that says "Repair and service center", there you can use the warranty.

Well the controller will be covered by the maufacturing warranty and if this is the case they will replace the controller.

However wear and tear or accidental damage is not covered, so you will need to replace the controller yourself.

Follow the link below for terms and conditions for warranties and repairs:

    https://support.xbox.com/en-IE/xbox...epair/microsoft-complete-terms-and-conditions

Click this link for details on how to book in a repair:

    https://support.xbox.com/en-IE/my-account/warranty-and-service/help-with-existing-service-order

Also can i ask you to try and connect your controller via a cable and test the head set that way as if any of you home devices are making this problem happen, you can re-solve the issue that way.

    i hope this help,

    Hi there,

I'm not sure you have tried it, but something worth to try is to take your console to you friends place and try to see if you get the same issue at your friends place (where your friends console works and your controller and headset worked too). This is
to determine if it's indeed the console and not somehow a network related issue.

If you experience the same issues with your console, controller and headset combination at your friends location, then it's safe to determine it is indeed the console.

In such situation I do advise to contact official Xbox Support regarding this situation and explain what you have tried etc.

They likely will advise some steps to try and determine what to do next.

If the console works fine at your friends location then it is an issue most likely caused by your home network and it might be an option that your friends takes his console to your place to see what happens
