Mic chat problem with external DAC + Xbox One X

Hello to everybody, I need help with a (chat wiring) problem.

I have an external DAC connected to my XB1 X by optical wire. Stereo headphones plugged into the DAC. The game sound quality is truly excellent with this set-up but there is a problem.

Previously, on my old Xbox One, I used the kinect as mic for in game chat when using the DAC.

Now, unable to use the kinect, I bought a small external mic.

Plugging the mic's 3.5mm jack directly into the controller - does not work . So I bought a Y-splitter which is connected to the controller and then connected the mic to the mic end of the splitter - still no chat.

Probably need to do some extra wiring but how? Any suggestions?

    :)

Chat to headset through external DAC

    Hello everybody,

need assistance for an old problem which probably concerns a minority of Xbox players but which does not have an "official" Microsoft solution but many do-it-yourself set ups.

My Xbox One X is connect by optical wire to an external DAC. Excellent sound to my headset which is plugged diectly into the DAC but, obviously NO CHAT.
Since the Xbox One does not provide combined game sound and chat audio to headsets using this kind of set up.

Spent hours on the internet trying to find a solution and found this one:

Xbox One Headphone Setup With Working Chat Audio

Haven't tried it yet. Has anybody tried/used this solution with satisfactory results? Are there other alternative methods to get chat to the headset when using an external DAC?

Thank you so much for any suggentions and/or help you might provide

Chat to headset through external DAC

    Dear Arminator,

thank you once again for the information.

I'm confident your solution will work and as soon as I have gathered all the necessary adapters and have figured out the wiring I will try it out.

I'm really happy about my Xbox One X (and all the previous ones I have owned), so being able to get top quality sound from it through some high end audio gear is fantastic!

Much appreciate your time and help.

Chat to headset through external DAC

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

My problem is the following (described in a more detailed way):

I want to use a high end PC headset to game and chat on my Xbox One X. The headset has two jacks; one for game audio and one for the mic.

If I plug the mic jack directly into the controller and the audio jack into the DAC I DON'T get any chat audio. Doing the same thing with a Y splitter connected to the controller (and plugging just the mic jack in also does NOT allow for chat audio).

I want to use my DAC since the audio quality is noticeably better with this set up and it also allows me to enjoy game audio with high impedance stereo headphones without loss of volume (the controller just doesn't have enough power to drive 250/600 ohm
    headphones).

All my connections are CTIA compatible.

Hope to have supplied enough information to know if what I want to do is possible.

    Thanks again for any information.

    Chat through a HI-FI headphone??

I doubt getting an answer for my hi-fi headphone - attachable mic - microsoft adapter problem as posted above. It probably would not work anyway. Maybe a compromise solution could be: PC headset with two 3.5mm jacks (audio + mic). The audio jack to the DAC,
    mic jack to the adapter.

This might be the only way to get chat audio to the headset while maintaining superior game audio from the DAC. Check out the forthcoming Audio Technica ATH ADG1 PC headset.

Will XBox Series X support external DAC/Amp hardware via USB?

I am far from an audiophile but recently have taken interest in improving my audio. I invested in a pair of Beyerdynamic mmx 300 2 (based on the the dt770 model). The sound is great but I was looking for a dac/amp with mic input that I could use with party
chat that would be "future proof" with the series x and the loss of the optical output make it complicated.

I was maybe looking at the xblaster g6 but at the moment it doesn't seems to support the party chat and not sure will be compatible with the series x.

Anybody would have any advice for an amp/dac outside the the astro mixamp which I keep hearing very mix review.
Again, I wish we could get someone from Microsoft to take an interest in getting some answers for us. I'm pessimistic about the relative priority that will be given to sound devices and expect we'll be stuck with "official licensed products" using proprietary
    hardware and connectivity protocols.

On PC this would be an easy problem to solve--there are myriad options from which to choose.

One possible approach would be to use a DAC/Amp with integrated microphone controls like the Schiit Hel: https://www.schiit.com/products/hel

Another approach would be to use an audio-only DAC + Amp stack or combination DAC/AMP then use a USB mic, for example, for chat. I use a Blue Yeti mic for chat and any of several DAC + Amp stacks that I own for audio. This works great if I happen to be
playing a Windows 10 game, and it works OK if I happen to be using streaming to pay an XBox game through my laptop, but it has serious limitations and doesn't work at all straight from a console.

The best answer I've had for pure XBox One gaming was to build my own headset from a Focal Elegia heapdhone with a modmic, then I plug that straight into my controller. It works, but I'm sacrificing audio quality by going through the controller, and plenty
of headphones require more amplification than the controller could hope to provide.

For most dac/amp combos for chat on xbox, I believe you'll need a Y splitter cable, put that in your controller and connect the Y splitter to your separate microphone (antlion, vmoda what have you) and your hdphns
into the dac/amp combo and your good to go with party chat and audio ( I believe!)

This is correct. Plug the Y into the controller and your mic into the mic half of the Y. Run the other half of the Y into an amp using either a 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo ("line in") cable, or a 3.5mm to dual RCA adapter cable, depending on what kind of inputs
your amp has. In this case you won't need / can't use a DAC because the controller already does the conversion to analog for you.

    --

With the current Xbox One, it is possible to use an optical (TOSLINK) cable of virtually any length to a DAC/Amp for game audio, then simply plug a mic into the controller for chat. I briefly looked into lavalier microphones (i.e., lapel mics) as a convenient
alternative to boom mics like the VModa / Modmic, but I haven't tried any.

With the upcoming XBox Series X, there's no clear path to getting game audio into a headphone except to pull it off of HDMI using a receiver, an HDMI switch/splitter with audio out, or possibly a TV with an optical out.

If the XSX will support general purpose audio out and USB microphones, that sort of opens up a lot more possibilities--although the console looks to be short on USB ports when you might need as many as 3 of them for a controller, a DAC and a microphone.

Bluetooth support would be a nice half-measure since there are some DACs that support Bluetooth as well as BT receivers like the Fiio BTR5 or Qudelix 5K that could allow you to beam game audio to the headphones or IEMs of your choice.

The silence on this thread is only reinforcing my suspicion that audio is simply not a priority for XSX. It never really has been, and that has created a circular tragedy where better audio support is not implemented because it's not seen as a priority,
and demand for better audio quality is stifled by a lack of support for it. LAME.
