Messages empty after system update

Messages are automatically deleted after 30 days, but if the messages you're missing are more recent than this then try power cycling (support.xbox.com/.../power-cycle-console)
your console and see if they return.

If that does not work - are you able to see these messages on Xbox.com, in Smartglass or in the Windows 10 Xbox App?

Hi, it could be that the system cache is full, Try emptying the cache, the games will update again, but hopefully, not anymore after that 1 time. Here is instructions for emptying the cache

support.xbox.com/.../clear-system-cache

Seems that it was likely due to getting a message from someone in the update preview program. I checked (more like triple checked) my messages again last night just to verify that my message box was empty, which it was. I then checked for a system update
before I shut down the console. It said update available so I did the update and immediately after the update installed, I checked my messages again. There was the phantom message, which was nothing but a message from someone I know is in the preview program...
oddly enough, it was just a message... no text. Deleted it and I now have a 0 again by my messages. Yay.

Okay, I deleted all messages in the smartglass app *except* an empty message from Xbox Live that seems to have appeared with the update to the new UI (just a guess, can't confirm). Still no joy. I *thought* that this empty Xbox Live message was some sort
of reserved system thing, but the smartglass app let me delete it, and once I did so, messaging on xbox.com started working again. Thanks for the tip, shotinthefoot2!
