Memory issues with Xbox 360

Hello everyone, I'm new here.

I was hit with nostalgia today, so I took out my old Xbox 360 arcade and decided to download Castle Crashers from the xbox live marketplace.

I bought the game, hit download, and this problem occurred: memory full.

The xbox 360 arcade does not have a Hard Disk, or internal memory of any relevance. It came with only a 256MB memory unit (wich is almost completely full... the system mandatory download to connect with Xbox Live took 233MB).

So, I formatted an old USB flash drive from the bottom of my drawer (4GB) and tried again... no way to download the game, still. Memory full.

Am I doing something the wrong way? Or is it impossible to download a game from the marketplace directly on the USB, bypassing the full Memory Unit?

If it is indeed impossible... is there any other way to play that specific game on my console? Can I download the game from a PC, slap it on the USB flash drive, and then transfer that pen drive into the Xbox? Can I "download" a game into the cloud, instead
of the memory unit, and then tranfer said game from the cloud to the pen drive?

I did everything and checked twice... Then after i tried to download another game, i found out the problem.

When i first tried to download the game, it recorded the (attemped) download to the full memory unit. SO EVEN AFTER I CONNECTED THE USB, EVERY TIME I TRIED TO DOWNLOAD AGAIN, IT WENT STRAIGHT TO THE MEMORY UNIT !! XD

After I found out the loophole, I had to open the stopped download, redirect it to the usb pen drive and everything went smoothly.

Hi there,

you should be able to download a game directly to the external storage device as far as I know.

Please double check all the steps on how to format a flash or external drive for the Xbox 360 here:

If all is set up fine, you may have to clear the cache on the console via

Settings - System - Storage - highlight storage device and press Y to get a menu to clear the storage. Be sure to do that 3x and restart the console.

Often in the older 360 consoles with the built in memory unit, this issue will occur.

When the memory unit fails, the Xbox sees that there's an update available since it can't see the update that was on the storage device. When the Xbox tries to download/install the update, the update can't install because of the failed storage device.

Does your Xbox 360 have the memory unit and/or the hard drive?

Just to update anyone else with this issue or who just wants to know in general. I have purchased a used official 250GB Xbox 360 HDD for my Xbox 360 Slim on Ebay for $25. I still have the 4GB memory removed from my Xbox that was causing issues before due to corruption, and installing the HDD allows for me to install all updates! So if anyone's 4GB Xbox 360 S has a removable memory chip like mine, and also has an official Xbox HDD, I would suggest removing the built in 4GB memory and try to install any system updates to your HDD instead.

Can you try using a different memory device, such as a USB drive configured for use with Xbox 360, to see if that resolves the issue?
