Media streaming to Xbox One question

Have desktop PC with huge secondary HD used to store family photo, video, music, etc. Applicable subdirectories set to share & stream to other devices around house. In main living room, we use Xbox One's internal media player app, and then browse to applicable
    subdirectory on remote desktop.

My question is about codecs. When clicking files with "x" extension, does it use decoders onboard desktop PC (maybe Windows Media Player?) -OR- decoders inside Xbox app itself? We are having trouble with *some* mkv files, but not all which is kind of strange.
Some stream fine, some don't. Trying to decide if searching for additional codec packs on desktop (probably shark007) is attacking problem correctly or if focus needs to be on Xbox.

Also, Xbox built in app is SUPER klugey. Typical Microsoft, the new & improved version was massive downgrade over legacy Xbox 360 version, which I thought was really well done. The One's updated version, well, frankly sucks. Also willing to try third
party media app on Xbox if anyone has recommendations there.

Thanks in advance, and best wishes for a Blessed 2019!

    ~Vol

Playing music from my computer to xbox one?????

Yes with the media player app it's possible to stream music and video from a computer or USB 1-3.0 storage devices.

Here is a link to the Xbox One Media Player frequently asked questions.

Old question luckily a ton of features have been added since the Xbox Ones release.

Media streaming to Xbox One question

Sorry for delay. Crazy around the house this time of year!

Yes I've been using the X1 built in streamer app, but it takes a TON of button clicks just to navigate through the folders to get to what I want (they aren't meta tagged with the various items in the main menu, so I have to use folder view). The X360 version
of same app was much cleaner and way more user friendly.

Tried VLC and it had same problem of needing a gazillion button clicks to navigate to content. Have since installed Kodi. Haven't had much time to play yet, but it looks like it may be closer. I'd like an app that scans user-defined media directories
(NOT entire PC), and builds its own media catalog. On the surface it looked like Kodi could do that, but I need to poke around some more. Also tried using Plex on the desktop, but it took hours to catalog and its little subdirectory took up almost 100 GB
on my hard drive. It was bizarre.

Also, ignore the mkv issue. I figured that one out. Sorry for rambling, but at least I'm making progress!

    Hi Vol4Ever,

So are you having issues streaming what you are doing on your PC to your Xbox? Is that done through the built in Media Player app?

I did some research and I found that MP4 and MKV files don't get read very well and unfortunately I don't think there are any codecs that you can download online. I found this how-to guide that may help and maybe you can set up the streaming again to re-establish
a better connection between the PC and Xbox:

VLC is a media app as well as Kodi on the Xbox One as alternatives to the built in Xbox Media player app.

I got it working. I had the Digital Media Renderer No driver found error.

I then went into Windows Media Player. Under Stream I selected Automatically allow devices to play media. Then under Stream,
More Streaming Options I made sure the Xbox One was allowed from the Windows Media Player, I right clicked on a movie/video in my library and selected "Play To" and then Xbox One. I heard the movie start.

I went to media center on the xbox one and all files are now showing
